Change logs?

PostThu Feb 12, 2015 3:26 pm

It's great to see a new version of Fusion arrive. I think it would be even better if with every release some sort of release notes to see what has changed. Am I overlooking something or are they indeed nowhere to be found?

Change logs are not a luxury item. They are very, very necessary. You can't safely update without them. Especially not when this is combined with an installer that will overwrite the previous version.

I would appreciate hearing an official stance on this, hoping that this is all temporary. Currently I am unable to recommend deployment of Fusion anywhere other than very small outfits, because of these two issues alone.

Turns out the free version will actually overwrite Fusion Studio, too. This is not clever, guys.

It's especially infuriating since this was all working properly before.

What's the plan, BMD?

I add my voice in this thread too since even Steve Roberts ignored the change log subject in the other thread.

We have to know what changes between Fusion updates guys! It is an essential information for decision making. Fusion is not resolve. It needs a different approach.

Absolutely, a changelog is a necessity for software that is used in a professional software.
Traditionally, eyeon have always been very good in that regard, it'd be nice to see that continue.

Oh, and an official announcement on the forum and, maybe, facebook or so, wouldn't hurt either.

Cheers,
Mike

Let's get over the eyeon era, it is BMD that gave as a $2000 software for free and in free there is not such thing as "absolute necessity".I also see more requests and less thanks than i expected in the forum. Of course that is just my personal opinion and i am sorry it does not sound pleasant.
I suggest patience to all.

Some get it for free to learn it and some pay for it to work.

Those who work with it and have to make decisions about updating or not in a professional environment with deadlines, NEED to know about the changes to make those decisions.

I am a hobbyist and i may not see this from the right side. It seems that you will base your
decision on fixes and changes rather than on key features you already know.
And unlike me you do not have the luxury not to know what you need.

lets not forget paying customers here.....

Also this is vital for studios running it, knowing what is broken what is fixed ect.

So yes it is vital, I am glad some get it for free....but even blender does changelogs

Another +1 for this - change logs are absolutely necessary to the users who are making a living in the industry. I speak as a paying customer, not a hobbyist. And like Pieter I find it difficult to recommend fusion in any professional environment until this (and the render farm issues, which includes the licensing problems and the linux port) are addressed, or at least until we are given some indication that they will be and over what time scale this will happen (I know Rony is working on the render machine licensing issue now).

And a gentle point to the guy who seemed to think we shouldn't be asking this - we are trying to help Black Magic sell their product by giving them valuable insight into what they need to do to actually compete, specifically with Nuke and to a lesser extent AE etc. A larger user base, covering both the paid and unpaid editions, is of benefit to all of the existing users.

Also, the free version overwriting the paid one is not good. You should be able to run both, even if only to check that bugs exist in both (or either). Again, this is a service to Black Magic in that we are providing free information to help debug their product.

Update - just noticed that fu7.7 is shipping with render nodes supported. Haven't tested it yet but hopefully that's one issue resolved. Good work, Rony!

Just wanted to add that I found out you can change Fusion's install directory. The installer has an Advanced button where you can set the directory to whichever one you like.

I was so used to Fusion's previous installers I didn't even bother to look.

Would have been nice to have seen that mentioned. In a changelog maybe?

Changelogs == requirement.

P Lease post them online as well, not included with the download, but viewable from the web without downloading the update.

Also, like previous versions of Fusion, can always rename the folder after install.
You can then use batch files with user env variables set for different builds of fusion.

Rony, thanks for being so active on the forum.
Do you have any position on the topic at hand i.e. the lack of changelogs?
All the work you guys are putting in improving Fusion will have little effect if people don't know whether or not they can upgrade safely.

It's cool to see progress, but we're in the same boat...we're going to need those too.
This time around it was an easier decision, because we didn't have render nodes prior to 7.7. So usage of 7 was limited anyways, but from here on out, we're going to need to see what we're looking at before upgrading. Otherwise we have to go into extended periods of testing, which is no good for anyone.

Thanks!
