FusionQTServer

PostFri Jan 29, 2016 5:27 pm

So I had a question regarding using quicktimes in Fusion. (on windows 7)
I know best practices are to use image sequences in Fusion. But I was curious as why Fusion takes such a hard hit when there are quicktime files in a comp. We have some comps that have multiple .mov files in them and when you open the comp, Fusion actually starts a seperate FusionQTServer.exe for each loader( that's loading a .mov)...resulting in very slow comp open time, for a comp that is rather small...like 150k.
Are these speed hits the same on the mac's Fusion?

Depending on the used Codec in the QuickTime you need to read the whole file before you can start to decode one frame
And fusion is forced to use the qt server because apple don't offer a 64bit version of QuickTime on Windows. So you have to start a separate 32but application that streams the result to the 64bit host

It would be nice if Fusion supported MKV/WebM. It's everything a non-pro would want, and considering how much trouble a deprecated QuickTime is, having something that's actively developed, open source, and natively supported on multiple OS's and web browsers is kinda nice. Heck, you can directly upload to YouTube now. And it has features that are nice like multiple file linking, multiple streams, metadata, subtitles, error recovery, etc..

yeah, I guess I know why the FusionQTserver starts up. I just didn't realize it started a separate one up for each quicktime that's in the comp. I know adobe has it's own Qt server, but it seams to only have one for the app. ( after effects in this case).
...it amazes me how "our industry" produces so much awesomeness yet still relies on something as broken as quicktime.

Well it's a 32 bit application, maybe there's a memory issue that makes having multiple 32 bit processes better than having one? Or maybe it allows multithreading?
