Paint and mask paint tool-- tips and tutorials

Hi guys

I was going to get started using paint
I was wondering what is the task of the paint tool?
Does it only shows what you painted in diferrent areas you select?

Also if there are any tips and tutorials you wpuld recommend please let me know
