Student Project Hep Needed - Sliding Matte

PostFri May 20, 2022 4:02 pm

DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.4.6

Hi! I am student working on a project that includes a simple matte painting. My matte keeps looking like its sliding behind the plate.

Things I have tried, that didn't work:
- plate wired directly into 2d merge node
- turned image plane in the 3d on but turned invisible to camera
- wired matte through 3d camera
- various adjustments to 3d camera (changing angle of view, far for clipping)
- motion blur on camera renderer
- separating matte and plate into two clips and layering in edit mode instead of fusion
- various depths of distance between plate and matte in 3D space, including taking various positions from point cloud
- wiring the matte to move with the 3d camera
- time stretcher node on the matte

Has anyone else experienced this and knows any tips/tricks? Thank you in advance for any help!

I'd say the most likely reason for the sliding is parallax. You have two different planes and then you are moving the camera which will cause the foreground to move differently than the background. Are you wanting the background image to look like it is far away or are you just basically doing a sky replacement?

Does this need to be done in 3D? Are you going to be adding in CGI 3D elements to the scene, is that why you did the Camera Tracking?

There will be no detectable parallax between the BG plate and treeline in front of it so just 2d track that. Also make sure the two layers you are merging together are the same size when you apply any form of tracking movement, that will cause sliding as Fusion moves each frame using ratios not pixels.

Hey,

Since your cam doesn't move in the z way, it's not the right way to reach your goal...
Simply track FG objects that you can see all the clip along, like poles and the sign near water, with a planar tracker > create the planar transform > insert it between the BG plate and the merge... None of this has to be done in 3D.

Kayla,

Since it's a student project, can you share the actual shot and matte painting with us via a google drive or Dropbox or something. This is/should be quite straightforward. I'd be willing to walk/talk you through it, so you'd know how to do it in the future.

If this is of interest to you either post the footage here in the thread or PM me with the details.

@xunile @Sander de Regt @ Sam Steti @ Kel Philm

I just want to thank everyone that replied to my post. I've been stuck on this problem for a week and y'all really came through!

As mentioned, I was using the wrong tracker. Planar tracker and working in 2D worked like a charm. I think I was overcomplicating a simply issue.

Once again, thank you all so much for helping. And my diploma thanks you too!
