Assigning particles coordinates

PostWed Sep 27, 2023 8:25 pm

I don't think that this is possible from what I can tell, but thought that I would ask, is it possible to assign individual particles user defined coordinates in 3D space rather than being randomly distributed/equally distributed/all at the same time (not sure what the last one means)?

I think you can do this with the pCustom node, but can you be more specific about what you want to achieve? How many particles are we dealing with here?

It's to make a star field that is based upon real star positions determined by astronomical data, it would be several thousand, different colours and sizes.

That does sound pretty ambitious. I suggest you take this question over to the wsl-forum at steakunderwater, since this is a pretty specific request. How is the astronomical data formatted?
You have to be able to access it from Fusion in a meaningful way as well.

pCustom with an image that encodes the position as RGB would be the easiest, then offset the image sample based on ID or age or UV or whatever you have on the particles already. If you emit using a pImageEmitter, you'll have a that pretty much ready to go.

Thank you, I'll check that out. I don't know at the moment, that is another problem to solve which I have been given a few pointers on.

Thanks, I'll have a look into how to do that.
