Size of image in inch * 300. That's the minimum required resolution, in pixels, of your image.

I don't think you can export 300 dpi from any compositor... Correct me if I am wrong!

You can export "300 dpi", in terms of the image itself, from anything you want. You can't set the dpi flag in the image header, so it will default to 72 probably, but you can change that very easily with something like XNView or some online tool.

The 72dpi is weird enough as it is. Both my phone and my 24 inch screen are full HD. What is the 72 dpi based on?

The origin of 72dpi
Apple ImageWriter II - Top 2
Apple’s ImageWriter 2 (1985 -1996)

It all started with apple’s attempt to match the size of text on screen to the size of the text when printed. This was termed as WYSIWYG (pronounced “wiz-ee-wig”) or (What You See Is What You Get). This was done by matching the screen resolution of apple’s then computer screen to the Apple’s ‘ImageWriter'(a dot-matrix printer) first introduced in 1983. So for example a 12px on a mac screen would display the result exaclty how the image and text would look like when printed. This method worked for mac alone, since early version of PC desktops were 96dpi which made macs a natural fit for early desktop publishing. The ‘WYSIWYG’ method is almost impossible today due to a huge variation in screen sizes.

Apple has a lot to answer for.

Just set the .ResolutionDPI in the Saver's format tab.

I'll be a nerd...

It's odd that Fusion has this option since DPI doesn't actually mean anything in terms of digital files. DPI (Dots Per Inch) is the resolution a print head can spray ink onto a printing surface. I would expect Fusion to use PPI instead (Pixels Per Inch) which is how many pixels the image is set to per inch. Which is also pretty meaninginless in a digital world.

It's not meaningless, it's in the header and other software like say, Photoshop will use it automatically.

hello guys... for the love of God - I just spent 1.5 hours trying to find that screen shot this guys showed with the 300 DPI option...

I'm in Davinci 16... can someone please tell me where to find this.

I need to send a 300 dpi screen shot (coloured) to a Film Festival and I give up... doesn't appear in the Davinci manual anywhere... nothing...

a breadcrumb directory/link branch path would be most useful - if someone could be so kind ... as the screen shot from the other gentleman did not provide enough info for me to figure it out...

In DVR, you need to add a 'Saver' node to your comp in the fu page. If the 'custom dpi' option does not appear, try another image format.
To generate the file(s), click on 'Render all savers' in the Fusion menu.

In this case you might have saved some time by reading this thread again.

The dpi is meaningless these days. Just save it out in the proper pixel resolution and it *will be fine* with the Film Festival.

300 dpi in itself is meaningless without further guidance. Does the Film Festival only require 300 dpi? Or do they mention how big it must be at 300 dpi? You can send them a 300x300 file, which will be one inch by inch at 300 dpi, but it won't be any good.

Or you can send them a 3000x3000 file which will be 10 inch by 10 inch at 300 dpi. If it's for an actual printed brochure they may say they need it to be 5 x 4 inches at 300 dpi which would mean 1500x1200 pixels. But if they need to print an A2 sized poster at 300 dpi it will be way bigger.

Apparently this dpi option is only available in Fusion studio, but you could have downloaded Gimp or Krita or whatever in the time you were looking for the solution (which is unneccessary - see above) and opened and resaved the image in those programs to satisfy the recipient.
