Lack of input options?

PostMon Mar 02, 2020 7:27 am

I have 2 mov files from client. Uploading them to fusion I see the slight difference in brightness, which makes me feel that one of the versions has been adjusted.

Double check of meta showed only difference in codec ProRes 4444 vs ProRes 422 Proxy.

But once I had checked in Nuke i was absolutely freakout - Nuke shows that files has different gamma settings 1.8 vs 2.2

My question is, where I should check the file input data inside fusion, to notice this technical differences, or i just have to use Nuke?

Nuke gamma defaults for prores files are bonkers and have absolutely nothing to do with how the file was encoded. Select same setting for both files to see if they actually differ.
I do stuff.

Hendrik Proosa - I just don't understand how Nuke is able to recognize the gamma settings for every input and Fusion can not. Yes, we have gamma and color space option inside loader node but what to choose there, if no any data in meta (or at least Fusion can not show whole meta :? ) and you don't have any description from the client, just an MOV file.
How to figure out that one file is gamma 1.8 and another one 2.2 and so on...

BTW: Source Gamma Space menu inside Loader node doesn't have simple options like gamma 1.8, 2.2, 2.4 along with those awesome long list. The only user-friendly way I found so far, is to use OCIO Colorspace node which is way more clear. But you still have to know what is the target gamma for your input material.

Nuke uses colorspace defaults from project properties for most of the stuff, for some gamma expectation is hardcoded (this is where 1.8 comes from), some are read from metadata (AlexaV3LogC sometimes).

Again, difference of 1.8 vs 2.2 is not by some magical detection ability in Nuke but most probably due to one file having 4444 and other 422 flavor or some other irrelevant difference. There are no gamma 1.8 files floating around as far as I know, prores by default should have pure power law gamma 2.2

You MUST know the colorspace of your footage for properly handling it, unless you can read it from file metadata.
I do stuff.
