Can't use H264 on Windows?

PostMon May 04, 2020 11:21 pm

Maybe I'm missing something but I can't get an H264 files to work in Fusion.

I get a "no such file or directory" error in the console. These are with H264s that are either created in Fusion itself, or in Resolve.

The files will definitely play down in other software, so the files do indeed "exist."

Fusion Studio version: 16.2 Build 22

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 2080 Ti 11GB x4

Noticed that as well and I feel like that is a new bug. But it is generally not a good idea to work on h264. It's probably easier to transcode your file into a format that fusion likes. Exr sequence or ProRes seems to work pretty good in my experience. (If ProRes works I guess DnxHD should work as well)

Of course, I know it's not good to work in H264.

But sometimes you need to be able to bring in the footage and do things.

For example today I had to do a ton of paint overs of plate references for our roto vendor and because of this bug I had to convert every single one of these plate previews to another format, do the painting because I couldn't import H264, and then trash all the files afterwards.

Shouldn't have to do that...

I agree. I really hope Blackmagicdesign can start to clean up their softwares again. Currently every new version introduces new bugs while old bugs are still there. Maybe try Fu9 which is more reliable.

Agreed.

Things are feeling pretty sloppy. I'm hoping that we'll be really impressed and surprised here soon..

Fu9 isn't without its own issues (tracking nodes tend to be pretty "crashy") but I've stuck with it instead of upgrading to verison 16 for the same reasons I'm with Resolve 15.3. I value stability over all else.

This bug still occurs in ver.17b6.

It seems to occur when decoding H.264 MP4 with Direct X. You can avoid this problem by installing FFmpeg and using it for decoding at present.
(However, since FFmpeg may not be available depending on the working environment, this is not a fundamental solution.)

Incidentally, whether this bug occurs or not seems to depend on your PC configuration.
As far as I have verified, the problem occurs on AMD CPUs and NVIDIA GeForce series graphics board machines.
On the other hand, I have not encountered this problem on Intel CPUs and NVIDIA Quadro series graphics boards, not only in ver.17b6, but also in ver. 9 and 16.

Also, the Fusion page in Resolve can play H.264 MP4 without any problem regardless of the PC configuration.

From the above, I personally suspect that the cause is the decoder, or some kind of non-optimization in the software, or both.
