DoF in Fusion?

PostSun Nov 15, 2020 3:18 pm

I'm doing some tests comparing Z-depth DoF in Fusion 17, After Effects (Fast Bokeh Pro) and Nuke (ZDefocus).

Having a hard time getting Fusion looking good. Defocus doesn't cut it. Depth Blur looks better (still not nearly as good as AE or Nuke) but it doesn't have the bokeh shape that the others do.

Any tips for getting a professional quality result in Fusion? Here is a closeup showing the problem Fusion's Depth Blur has with corners. From left to right, AE, Nuke, Fusion.

And here are the full images. AE, Nuke, Fusion Depth Blur, Fusion Defocus.

Take a look at this tutorial by Simon Ubsdell, 'Blackmagic Fusion: "Better" Depth Blur & Other Depth Effects', which might help in some way.

Don't, this is a terrible tutorial. Its just a blur mixing back in depth. It will never create decent dof effect.

Thanks guys.

I saw that video before and I feel like he's getting a decent look with that particular scene, but it doesn't translate elsewhere. I tweaked Defocus some more and this is slightly better, but it's still having corner problems. Seems like the Fusion algos are a bit lacking. Honestly they look a lot like the native AE Camera Lens Blur, which also struggles with edges and corners.

Will check out that thread!

Oh yeah, that's the ticket. Too bad it costs $239.

Hey, Blackmagic: if you want to unseat AE and Nuke once and for all, license one of these high quality DoF algos. It would be a killer feature!

No please no. Frischluft is over a decade old, no real improvements have been made. It doesn't support deep data either.

If BMD really wanted to update the DOF tools in fusion, you would need to add

* Customizable kernel (theres currently no way to do this in fusion natively)
* Good Edge handling for "flat images", with things like segmentation and inpainting.
* Deep data support

pgBokeh is the gold standard for post VFX Dof, but its Nuke only and development have stopped.

One can dream and hope tho....

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I already thought it was kind of a ripoff and that makes it even more so. I got Fast Bokeh Pro for AE on sale for like $37 and I actually like the look better than Lenscare. Still, I'm sure it doesn't offer the pro features you listed.
