Tool search window opens off screen

PostSun May 09, 2021 6:26 pm

I'm learning Fusion right now and I just learned about the Shift+SB shortcut to open the tool search window, which is handy. However, on my dual-display system, it always opens almost entirely off the screen. Can I change this? Here's a screen shot where you can see the search window in the bottom right corner:

Hmmm... It's supposed to open in the center of the screen. From the looks of it, it's opening in a position that would be the center relative to the upper-left corner of the Fusion layout, except on the wrong monitor. I've rearranged your screenshot, repositioning the main Resolve layout over the higher-res Fusion layout, and you can see that the Add Tool menu would be right in the middle.

I'm not aware of a solution, but from my testing, it appears as though the Add Tool dialog might always appear on whatever is designated as the main display. I don't know how it would affect Resolve (I only use Fusion standalone), but you could try making your UHD screen the main monitor and see if that fixes it. Of course, that could have other side-effects.

In any case, the dialog should probably be pinned to the Fusion interface instead of the monitor's dimensions, but as far as I know, that's not something that the end user can change.

Hi Bryan! I just heard your name for the first time like three days ago and started reading your blog post on expressions and now look who it is responding to my question! lol

I tested your suggestion to set the UHD display as the main display and that did seem to fix the problem. In my case, I can't use it this way because the smaller screen is a touch screen and it doesn't work properly unless it's the main display. However, I discovered that the menu will re-open where I close it so long as I close it on the main display. If I close it on the UHD display, which is what I was doing at first, then it re-opens off-screen as seen in the above screenshot. The touch screen makes keeping it on the main display convenient though.

Thanks for your help!

We're a small community! I used to try to be everywhere Fusion was being talked about, but I had to withdraw from most places just for the sake of my own sanity, so now I mostly frequent this forum and https://www.steakunderwater.com. I don't respond to everything, but if I see an interesting question I'm pretty likely to pop in.

That's good to know. Still inconvenient, as most of the time you'd probably want it to be close to the nodes view. Better than the problem we often saw before, though, where sometimes the menu would appear on a screen that was no longer connected, and there were some keystroke gymnastics required to retrieve it. That might still be necessary in the event that someone's main screen is less than half the size of their secondary monitor. I could see it happening with one of those ultra-wide screens.
