Expression on Time Speed Node Breaks it

I am trying to link the Delay Value on a time speed node to a custom control in another node. Once I add a delay, lets say a value of 5 frames, if I go past the 5 frame mark on my time ruler the node will turn red and stop working. If I do the same thing without the expression it works just fine. Does anyone know anything to fix this?
