Update automatically imported PSD files

PostWed Oct 06, 2021 1:23 pm

Hello,

I once saw a video where someone imported PSD files with layers into resolve using Effects Library and then choosing Fusion Composition .

After that He opened fusion and could see all the layers from psd file.
Then he changed - modified those layers in photoshop and it somehow automatically updated it in his fusion page.

I can't find the video anymore. Any idea how update those psd layers in fusion after modifying them in photoshop?

Thank you

Since Fusion loads footage from its location on the drive upon opening, I'd imagine that this happens automatically. Change the footage, reload your comp and the comp sees the new footage. It'd make sense if this happens with PSDs as well.

Just clearing the cache ought to do it, I should think.

edit: Oh, and forcing it to rerender the current frame, since clearing cache doesn't call for a rerender.

Where do you clear cache ? And how do you force it to rerender?
Do you do it while still in fusion under Playback?

I change the footage in photoshop, how do you reload composition? DO you reload it in edit section?

I am pretty new to fusion It all sounds like a foreign language.
I would really appreciate if you could give me a bit more detailed steps.
Thank you very much for your help

Easiest way to be sure is to restart Resolve.

In my testing on macOS - and Windows could be slightly different, I don't know - it will update automatically eventually, but it's not 100% reliable. I'm not really sure what triggers it exactly.

Here's a demonstration video showing me in Photoshop and Resolve:

You can see how it's quite unpredictable. You can also see me attempting to clear the Fusion cache and re-render the current frame. That would be important if the node was already cached (you can tell that by the green bar along the timeline in the middle of the screen), but it won't in itself cause it to detect PSD changes.

You can also see me going back to the Edit page to look in the Media Pool and try viewing the clip there, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Well, sometimes going to Edit shows the updated image. Whether it was actually going to Edit and opening the file in the media pool that triggered the update, I don't know. It could be updating on a timer in a background or something.

Clearing cache didn't work, eh? Well, that's disappointing. It should, but that's often the case with software—doesn't always act like you think it ought to!

To be clear, since it's pretty tiny in the video, to clear Fusion's cache, right-click on the spot where it shows memory usage in the lower-right corner of the screen. You'll get options to purge cache and rerender current frame. And reload FBX meshes, but that one's very seldom needed.

Thank you for your help,
What actually works for me now is this:

I have my PS open ..
I drop a PSD file into media (edit or fusion ).
You have to drop in into a edit timeline.
Change your psd in photoshop + CTRL +S
At this moment ,nothing has changed yet...
You have to move your playhead in your timeline away from the psd file
wait little bit , maybe 5-10s
Put your playhead back on the psd file and you should see it changed both in fusion and edit

Ah interesting - so having it on a Timeline is a way to trigger it to re-read it. That makes sense yeah.

Good catch!

Annoying a workaround is required and it doesn't just pick up changes automatically in Fusion, but good you've got a better solution than just waiting and hoping.
