Luma Matte?

PostWed Oct 13, 2021 3:25 am

As a long time user of After Effects, I’m wanting to begin using Fusion.
Unfortunately, I don’t seem to be able to replicate the AE 1 click function of a Luma Matte.
Eg: in AE, enable the [B&W] layer above to act as a Luma Matte. Please see the attachment.

Can anyone help replicate this function in Fusion?

It's not a one click solution, but depending on your footage, it's a 'one drag' solution.

Just drag the output of your matte to the blue input of the footage you want to 'track matte' (the blue input is the mask input) then in the settings tab of your footage, select 'luminance' in the channel drop down and you should be good to go 9 times out of 10.
There are other ways to do this (as there are always other ways to do things in Fusion) but this should get you started.

Check out this video I did on proper sky replacements. Might help you.

Off topic, but…

Hi Chris! Thanks for that tutorial; I've gone back to it frequently, as recently as last week. NCIS thanks you, too! :D

Hi Sander,

Excellent, thanks for the procedure and your help!

‘one drag’ ... plus 5-10 clicks. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to convert this into a macro, but that’s ok.

Cheers,
Dan Mavric
