Time to get Unreal

PostMon Dec 20, 2021 10:03 pm

Fusions 3d renderer works but hasn’t had much TLC for adding features, better 3d object import support so that textures all link and work without major manual work, speed improvements, modernized GPU support because OGL is on life support now.

How about moving to UnReal ? ? ? Some compositing app eventually will do why not Fusion first ? Sure it might mean a paid update to license the engine but I’d expect it’s going to be reasonable. So ?

Aside from your main philosophical thoughts I don't fully agree with, I'm also waiting for this.
More specifically, I'm not comfortable with baking textures in Blender not to be forced to relink them after importing the object in Fusion, but I think it's the way to go (if not and anyway, the OP part about that remains relevant)

you're insinuating BMD will take the initiative to even be in the game (behind Nuke which already has it). Even the 3D apps are getting more deep integration with Unreal. I doubt it will happen at all in Fusion. If anything, Unreal will start to build out its compositing tools even further as it continues head first into virtual productions. I think this is why Foundry jumped into the space.. to keep paying customers.

I haven’t been paying attention to Nuke lately. That said fusion’s underlying 3d renderer is on nearly dead tech so if it’s going to get replaced, and it will have to be soon, might as well move to something established and compatible with other apps. If it takes some encouraging here, give them a nudge. Todays release had some 3d text update, and metal support is good, but its still behind where it should be right now.

Fusion's 3D renderer got replaced in 17.1

Nothing against replacing it again, but let's not act like it's been untouched.

Considering it broke forwards compatibility and removed some features, I wouldn't call it "updated". Not sure how you would define the threshold between those terms anyway.

updated AFAIK - metal support if I recall. they would of made more noise if it was fully replaced. there are often incremental fixes but its still rather behind.

Adding metal support would be an update. Removing Cg support would be replacing. They broke forward compatibility of shaders, not just for M1 machines, but for all platforms. Shader debugging is also gone.
