Fusion composition to 300dpi print?

Hey there,

I have to make a Vinyl Cover and since i am doing quite well in DR Fusion i`d like to do it there. I am to slow and to un-creative in PS and Gimp ect.

The Problem is the Solution. They want it to be:
649 cm x 328 cm with 300 DPI

When i google and think about it, i get realy confused about pixels, dots and the theory behind the switch from a screen to print

Is there a known way or workaround to use Fusion for Print?

Any Tips?

Firstly, I'm pretty sure it'll be 649 x 328 millimetres, not centimetres? Unless this vinyl record is for King Kong? :)

So I opened Photoshop and told it to make a 649 x 328mm image at 300 DPI:
Image

And it gave me an image of 7665 x 3874 pixels. So that's the image size I would make in Fusion.

However I think there will be an issue with image metadata. I tried exporting a 7665 x 3874 PNG from Fusion Studio, then loaded it into Photoshop. By default it assumed the DPI was 72:

Indicating there's no metadata specifying 300 DPI, which might affect any printing process.

To fix that, I change the DPI to 300, and then corrected the Percent back to 100 (as by default changing the DPI wants to scale the image up):
Image

Then I saved that in Photoshop and re-opened it, and confirmed that the Properties showed it as being at 300 DPI (it has the correct metadata):

A second issue is that if this is going for printing, they may want it in CMYK, not sRGB. And Resolve/Fusion definitely can't export in CMYK.

So you may also need to use photo software like Photoshop to convert the Fusion image into CMYK - check with the printers as to what CMYK profile to use, as there are various different profiles.

I think all of that will then be OK, though it's not something I've ever tried to do myself!

Oh, nice. You dit even try it! Thanks man!

And yeah, sorry, you are right. Its not for King Kong :D

@Metadata and @DPI: Can`t i built it in fusion with 7665 x 3874 px, export it, open an empty PS Project with 300dpi and 649 x 328mm and drag the PNG into PS? Than the DPI`s should be fine and only CMYK is pay atention to...

Sure, that should work fine too.

Should a jpg be sufficient you can set a custom dpi resolution straight from Fusion's saver as well.

Oh wow cool, I missed that. And it even defaults to 300 when you tick "Set Custom Resolution"
Image

And I see it's supported in TIFF as well!

So you could export a 100% lossless image with DPI already set. That's pretty cool.

Is that option in the Standalone Version only? I have DR Studio, but there are the only options Zip(1Line) and Zip(16Lines) and no extra resolution option.

And for my understanding....the comp size would be still 7665 x 3874 pixels, right?

Sander and I are testing in Fusion Studio, using a Saver node.

But for creating still images and image sequences you can also use a Saver node in Resolve's Fusion page. Then there's a menu option in the Fusion menu called "Render All Savers".

Then you don't need to worry about comp/timeline size - just make a Background of 7665 x 3874 pixels and merge your content over that, sizing it appropriately. When done, output that to a Saver node set to TIFF + 300 DPI, then Render All Savers. Before rendering I'd set the comp range to a single frame - frame 0 to 0 - so you don't end up with hundreds of images saved. The Saver will then produce a single file called YourName00000000.tif.

I installed the standalone Version and yeah, there i am able to select tiff as a format and than i can have zip/deflate with custom resolution option. Great. The only downside seems, that i cannot use davinci resolve AND fusion standalone. When i switch between the applications, i each time have to type in the activation code :)

But i will try it with the stand alone Version. I like that workflow!

Cheers and thanks a lot guys

Ohh that's right, I forgot about that. When they crippled the Saver in Resolve's Fusion page, they for some reason removed TIFF support.

You can do what Sander described in Resolve with regard to JPGs; this is in Resolve:

Image

But there's no TIFF support in the Resolve Fusion Saver, for reasons I don't understand.

But yeah, as you have a Studio license, you should just use Fusion Studio. Much better all round.

That doesn't sound right. Both Resolve Studio and Fusion Studio should be activated with the same activation code, when on the same machine. Your activation key allows you to run both Fusion Studio and Resolve Studio on two machines simultaneously (four software installations total).

Once you've entered the activation key into Resolve and Fusion once, neither should ever prompt you again (on that machine.)

I wonder what's going wrong for you there.

Oh, realy? Is it maybe because i got the license with a camera i bought? I mean, i have not bought DR Studio itself. I bought a BM Camera with a studio license included.

No, an activation key is an activation key. They should all work the same.

Maybe contact BMD support if the issue persists.

After a restart tomorrow i will check this...because if the license works on 2 machines for both versions...that would be perfect for me!
