3D camera orbit around target?

With the 3D camera targeted on an object, I want to simply orbit around the object between, say, 2 points.

If I set a keyframe on the Camera's initial position, then move the track-head and reposition the Camera to a second position (equi-distant from the object), the camera tracks in a straight line between those two points while targeting the object (refer to the red line in the attached image).

What I would like is to be able to have the camera orbit around the object between those two points (refer to yellow dashed line in attached image). I found myself approximating a circular orbit by smoothing out the splines, but I would much prefer if there was an exact approach?

I think if you put a 3D transform node after your camera, you can offset the pivot of that transform node to the point where you want the camera orbit around and then animate the roation of that transform node. It's similar to parenting the camera to a null or empty in a 3D package.

That works perfectly, thanks Sander!
