Fusion lagging on playback: is it normal?

PostSun Feb 13, 2022 9:40 pm

Hi,
I started editing my clips on Fusion and unfortunately it's gotten very laggy to the point where it just freezes a clip while the music stutters through.
I upgraded from a 16gb to 32gb RAM, but there was no difference.
I've researched and done everything I could with the settings, tried different things, but it's still the same.
Is there anything else I can tweak to improve it? What else should i do?

My specs:
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070ti
RAM: 32gb (I just recently upgraded)
CPU: intel i7-9700K, 3.60 GHz
Motherboard: TUF gaming b360 plus
- drivers are updated, NVIDIA studio driver

Resolve settings:
- Free version, Version 17.0 build 39
- render cache/OM all in DNxHR SQ (tried almost everything)
- tried automatic/half resolution
- frame interpolation: nearest, standard faster, medium
- render cache: user
- timeline proxy mode: off
- use proxy/optimized media if available checked
- enable background after 1 second, checked
- automatically cache fusion effects in user mode checked (tried unchecked)
- automatically cache transitions in user mode checked (tried unchecked)
- gpu processing mode: auto unchecked, CUDA
- GPU selection: auto unchecked, GTX 1070ti checked

Are we talking about slow performance when it’s not yet cached or even after it’s cached? Because the first thing is probably normal while zur second thing is a bug.

Hello!

I have a very similar system and have been dealing with those issues for quite some time now. I found a few solutions that have made it run very smoothly. Still not full 24fps but at least it now works.

1) Turn the render cache off. Smart and User just render constantly and that will stop a system. You'll notice a quick improvement here.

2) Watch this video and implement the steps. These seriously free up computing capacity and have saved my now year-long project.

EDIT: Linking on this forum isn't great. The video is at (remove the hard break):

Let us know how this works!
Water cooled Windows 11 laptop
i9 12th gen - 64GB RAM - 16GB 3080ti
2TB 4th gen nvme main - 4TB 4th gen nvme scratch
Micro panel (thank you BM :) ) - Stream Deck
Resolve Studio 18.5
BenQ ultrawide - DeckLink 4k mini via Sonnet - 48” LG C2 OLED

Even after manual cache. I've tried almost all of the tutorials online, but it's still lagging :(

How do I know if it's cached?

I can never get it to play back realtime on the Fusion page unless it's a clip with nothing on it.

If I switch to the edit page and cache it, it will usually play back in realtime.

The green line indicates that it's cached to RAM. try disabling GPU processing on the node you're currently viewing. That helps in my case when it won't play in real time despite having cached. Sometimes it says it's cached but doesn't actually write it to RAM.
My experience is Fusion Studio though. I barely use Fusion in Resolve.
