Gen 5 Color Space

PostMon Apr 17, 2023 10:36 am

Finally, CineonLog tool supports BMD Film Gen5. Now what about Gamut? Why doesn't Fusion Studio have Color Space Transform?

In fact, the support was too late. BMCCP is being replaced by FX3 around me. BMD cameras are good, but closed specifications are difficult to use.

Along those lines, it seems weird to me that Resolve and Fusion don't ship with BMD camera raster formats.

This is honestly such a headache each time I’m working with files from Blackmagic cameras. Sure Resolve interprets them fine. But not even the Fusion Page does it correctly.
It’s always such a back and forth and you can’t be sure that what you’re seeing in Fusion is going to match the Resolve viewer.
At least if the production isn’t using ACES, which unfortunately many don’t do here I’m Germany.

We really need the color space transform OFX in Fusion. Including in the viewer LUTs.
Resolve, the Fusion Page, and Fusion Studio should match.

It is unfortunate that Fusion and Color are integrated into Resolve and yet do not benefit from it. Fusion has always been a slave to Edit and Color and Fusion has no access to them. Is it possible to check the grading results in Fusion like "Baselight for NUKE" ?

Alright, I know this isn't the same as having the CST plug in but isn't it acceptable to make a CST in the Color page, export the LUT and use that in Fusion. Just put the LUT viewer after your Saver or Media Out?

ACES is a special pain in the ass with Color Science 5. ACES in Fusion uses the OCIO 1.2 version which doesn't have BM camera. ACES in Resolve uses the 1.3 version which has the BM camera but looks different if you convert to ACEScg or AP1. I've ended up just using LUTs to get around it. If anybody has an ACES 1.3 config that works with OCIO I would love to try it with an upcoming Ursa 12k project.

Perhaps this is the answer to everything?

https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFound ... tag/v1.0.0

OCIO and this new config could replace CST. Of course, it is not a perfect match (almost the same), so it would be better to have the same CST tool. And I would like to see a tool or mechanism like Baselight for Nuke. The LUT does not reflect secondaries, etc.

@bentheanimator LUT and Scene-linear were not compatible. But maybe that's the way to go, thanks to the new CineonLog tool.

Finally, the Gamut node has a BMD color space in v18.5 beta3.

DaVinci Intermediate Wide Gamut is still missing.
