ACES 1.3 OCIO v2 support.

PostWed May 24, 2023 2:26 pm

I render in Vray, and I set up the latest ACES 2.2.0

I can't reproduce the exact output result I get from Vray in Fusion Studio, but I have no trouble to get the proper match in Ressolve 18.....

What I'm doing wrong?

In version 1.2 of ACES I could select Output_SRGB and the results where matching... now in 1.3 this option is gone, why, how it should work now, and why Ressolve 18 can but Fusion Studio can't?

Thank you.

I don't have the time this morning to do any testing, so take this info with a grain of salt:

sRGB Display is not the same as sRGB Texture. The Display ODT has a tonemap included—that's the ACES 1.0 - SDR Video in the View Transform. If you set that to Raw (I think; as I said, I don't have it open in front of me), then the images should match. But maybe don't quote me on that! :D

Thank you!

Yes, If I deactivate the Vray ODT (ACES 1.0 - SDR ) the images are the same, but I would like to see the ODT applied version in Fusion Studio.
Is there a way to do that? :?

Yes, use sRGB - Display instead of sRGB - Texture

There is no SRGB - Display in Fusion Studio for the Output Space when using OCIO 2.0
What do you refer to?

Hmmm... it looks like the OCIO v2 support is either bugged or incomplete. I just checked the ACES 1.3 config, and it only seems to recognize entries defined as ColorSpace. ViewTransform, Display, display_colorspace, and NamedTransforms are all inaccessible, as far as I can tell. Aces 1.2 (supporting only OCIO v1 features) is working as expected.

When using ACES v1.3 in Fusion, there is no appropriate ODT tool for OCIO v2 in Fusion. OCIO v2 seems to be different from v1.

If your source is ACEScg in Fusion, it would be easier to use ACES 1.2 in Fusion. It has "Output-sRGB". You can browse "Config 1.2" in OCIO Colorspace node in Fusion.

Yes, in new version display transforms are separated and should be applied with separate operation. It causes some confusion, solution could be wrapping the functionality into loaders and savers so that this additional step could be added in one place.

Nuke has similar problem right now, there is a related discussion with links to some additional sources that describe the thought behind this change in OCIO here: https://community.foundry.com/discuss/t ... discussion

Doug Walker, chief architect of OCIO discusses this change here: https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFound ... ssues/1369

Oh... I see! thank you all.

so I can have installed OCIO v2 (ACES 1.3) in the system, but won't entirelly work on Fusion, so In fusion I should stick with v1 (ACES 1.2) for the moment.

Interesting though that Ressolve has it right though.

I feel that Fusion has not been given the attention it deserves. Davinci Resolve needs to truly ALL IN ONE, where Fusion is the hub and can generate a large amount of templated customization to improve work efficiency. Especially in this new media era, where no one likes repetitive work, programmatic workflows will become mainstream.

yes... agree..

It makes actually big difference when using ACES 1.2 vs 1.3 in some areas, specially superbright colors...
How am I suposed to check that in Fusion? ...

Hopefully we get a fix soon for this...

mmmm I was thinking that maybe BlackMagic priorities here are somewhere else, but... their description for Fusion forum is ( Learn About 3D compositing, animatio, broadcast design, and VFX workflows )

Exr multipart splitter, Cryptomatte native EXR multipart support, proper up to date ACES workflow...
If all this areas make me loose time (and money) at the moment...

No Idea how complicated those things are to implement though... just saying out loud what I think I need.
If they get fixed I wouldn't mind to pay for a new license... really...

I don't think it's that hard to implement proper support, all they have to do is add OCIODisplay as node and also make that available as viewerLUT. They should've done this from the moment they decided to release OCIO2.x support.
