full texture, Sphere3D in Fusion (Free version)

PostMon May 26, 2025 8:50 pm

Hi everyone! I'm new to DaVinci Resolve and Fusion, and I'm using the free version.

I'm trying to create a 3D Earth using a Sphere3D and an equirectangular Earth texture. However, the image only shows up on part of the sphere — not the full surface. I want the texture to cover the entire sphere once (no tiling or repetition), but it doesn't wrap correctly.

I connected the image to a Blinn material and used a standard Sphere3D node. I also tried downloading ready-made Earth 3D setups for Fusion (with materials and everything), but the same problem happens — the texture doesn't map properly across the whole planet.

Am I missing something? Do I need to use UVMap3D or import a different 3D model with proper UVs? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I can't see the images you posted. Probably because you are new to forum and there are limits on attachments I think until you have more posts. But since you have free version of resolve, I assume it could be related to the fact that its limited to about 4K images, and if you have images larger than that it may auto scaled them down. I don't know for sure I've not used free version myself. Try to use 2K texture of earth and see if the same problem happens.

You should be getting normal output unless there is something else you haven't mentioned that could be the problem.

Its been a while since I worked on planet earth type comp, but it should be pretty straightforward as you said.

Thanks bro, you were right! I had never thought about it. I have another problem, the 3D lights do not work, they do not illuminate, I connected them to the 3D merge but they do not work, it is a shame that I cannot send images for you to see, but they simply do not illuminate, I made all kinds of adjustments to them and nothing, what could it be?

There are several situations where lights won't work and its something you sometimes want and sometimes don't want.

First is of course the 3D viewer. In the upper corner there fusion viewer there is option to preview lights and shadows or have flat shading. Even if you have no lights added to the scene, there is directional light by default so it can give a preview of shading for 3D objects. But you can have whole scene as flat shading. Check that to make sure its turn on.

Second common place is the Renderer 3D for output. Assuming you have added lights to the scene.

Pretty much every tool in fusion can be set to new defaults. By right clicking on the node and choosing settings: save defaults. This will then load the new tool with same settings as when you saved them.

I think Renderer 3D has lighting and shadows turn of by default so I have changed it to have mind on by default. It depends on how you want to work.

The scene itself is also important. Each 3D object has individual settings that control how it interacts with lighting. These settings determine if an object casts or receives shadows, and whether it is affected by light. Ensure these settings are correct for each object.

And lastly you can control lighting in the scene by using merge nodes and override 3D nodes.

Each merge 3D node has "pass trough lights" checkbox. When its turned off it blocks the lights connected upstream and when its turned on it passes trough lights downstream. This can be effectively used to light individual objects in the scene independent of other objects or to group lights which can be easily repurposed elsewhere in the scene or used in multi pass rendering scenario.

Less common but useful methods include override 3D node which can override what the settings are in the nodes and can be used for more complex compositions and there is replace material 3D node which can be used to add or change material similar to override 3D. Its unlikely that you are using them since you would probably mention it. So I would look into the first few options I mentioned.
