Fusion 20 Defocus Node

PostMon Jun 02, 2025 12:40 am

Hi,

Are there any plans to incorporate a Fusion equivalent to Nuke's ZDefocus node? It's probably the one thing that's really stopping me from switching completely to a Fusion workflow professionally. Without a solid defocus method I really can't make the jump so having that built in would make Fusion very competitive and would see a lot more people making the switch over.

Otherwise, if Blackmagic don't have any plans to incorprate this, has anyone created a plugin that can achieve equal results to Nuke's ZDefocus?

Thanks

What have you searched for and used so far? Its an old question with plenty of material to sink your teeth into. I doubt you will get an answer from Blackmagic on this, but its an old topic. Just search for threads on it. Plenty of material.

No, you don't have some Nuke's ZDefocus like in Fusion...
You may find your WF with some kind of workaround you feel comfortable with, or play with one of the 5 to 8 (I didn't count ;) ) types of blur nodes, like Variblur etc., or mimic what you find in the Hardware Renderer Accumulation effects' DOF, but I think you look for something auto like Nuke's one,
You may also play with the DepthMap btw...

Could you describe or better show the effects of zdefocus to understood how it is different and better from many other tools?
I saw only some video about bike but I don’t know this node.

Fusion currently doesn't have a built-in node to blur an image with both z depth and a custom kernel. But here are some paid 3rd party options:

Frischluft's Lenscare: https://www.frischluft.com/lenscare/index.php

Rowbyte's Fast Bokeh Pro: https://www.rowbyte.com/fast-bokeh

June's Depth of Field: https://june3546.gumroad.com/l/CGSDOF

Has anyone tried all 3? Would love to hear opinions on them. (I only have Fast Bokeh which is good, but a little confusing)

Frischluft is well known, well appreciated for a long time now, and it should be easy to collect opinions on it...

Frischluft is solid and reliable, but hasn't had any updates for many years. I do use it a lot though.

Carlo, if you go to https://www.frischluft.com/lenscare/index.php , you'll see that the OFX is available in the top right menus...
Unfortunately (for me* at least), as JP wrote it wasn't upgraded for a while, and I doubt an ARM* version exists, but it should work well as it always did
*I personally need an ARM OFX version

For somehow reason when i tried not see Ofx version but only ae version.
thanks
LIke others plugins in these pages no update, i had ZbornToy, developer is my old friend, but he also not updated it from many years be cause not sold enought to justify the work.

i would like to invest in a modern plugin which had also arm version, actually i have an Hackintosh with Intel and 6950 xt, but also a MacbookPro m2 Max, and i see a great difference of performance when i work with native plugin.
