Extrude polygon shapes

PostThu Jan 29, 2015 3:25 pm

This must be super simple, but I can't find the answer anywhere (I've looked everywhere!!).

I've imported an SVG, a logo, it's created a group of polygons with a 2D merge.

How do I extrude the 2D shapes? I want to be able to composite a 3D animation with textures/lighting etc but have stumbled on the first hurdle!

Thanks.

You can't extrude 2D shapes in Fusion directly.

Best solution is via the Krokodove plugins and their shape tools. However, they require the studio version of Fusion.

The other solution is to create a custom TrueType font that has your shape/logo as a character. Then you can use it in Fusion's 3D Text tool which has a couple of extrusion options. There should be freeware or cheap apps to create fonts.

Krokodove is your best bet but I never understood this omission really. If its possible to do it with the text why the hell it cant be done with any other vector shape as well? It has never affected my workflow since I always outsource my 3D objects and I only use Fusion 3D shapes to get 2.5D results but still extrude should be there.

Displace3d can be used to extrude, i.e. based on alpha.

It's a shame they stole the help files. Still to texture a shape try a projection or create a blin. Fusion is full of ways to texture a native 3D object.

Thanks for the replies folks... I ended up creating the 3d object externally and pulling a mesh in.
Still, I agree that basic extrusion should be applicable to any vector shape.

If you have a lot of Logo stuff to deal with try this trick by the legend himself "SirEdric":
Use a freeware tool to convert vectors into a font.

Use the Text3D tool to extrude the text, and with Fusion 7 even change it's profile, bevel edge etc. ;)

Import the SVG via Fusion menu then copy out the vectors into an spolygon Node.

I can attest to it being a kind of hell.

Every vector has to be a separate node joined by merge or a boolean subtract node. Every vector.
Then you can 3D extrude.

I had to do a star which is a frame with 22 "holes" in it.
Also note: there may be a bug with bevels doing the first boolean subtraction correctly but just not doing the rest. GAH! The trick is how to get it to come in without Davinci changing the aspect ratio. Grrrrr. It does something weird between square and your Davinci timeline res.

My tip. I started with the logo on a Square 1000 x 1000 px background.
Logo in bottom left corner. *Important* If you want to see your work keep it to within the lower left corner half. Davinci seems to use the bottom left corner as the zero zero reference point.
When it comes in it looks squished. When you past it into the spolygon node (using casey’s method) it de squishes. GAHHHH oh!

I tried other aspect ratio starting points with various levels of abandonment.

Casey covers some of it on the tube:
Custom 3D Extruded LOGO in Fusion! - Resolve 18.6

Jake has another take with:
The Ultimate Guide to Importing SVG Files in Davinci Resolve Fusion

Hope this helps and that Davinci resolves this little weirdo.

Having a logo as a vector in resolve is simply awesome. The possibilities – even in flatland – are infinite.
