3DCam Near/Far Clip - Root of all Evil or my understanding?

PostTue Dec 29, 2015 11:31 am

Good Morning Dear Forum,

El-Capitain, Fusion 8 Beta 3, iMac 5K

I have found that there are unexpected interactions with Near and Far Clip between:
  • Polygon Breakup
  • Anti Aliasing
  • Transparency

What I expect to happen in on page 15 of the Tools Manual, what actually happens is somewhat different.

Here's my Camera3D settings:

From the manual one would expect that the Adaptively Adjust Near and Far Clip would over ride the settings above.

For visability this is true. For the list above the near and far clip have some effect. The Comp that I'm working on has some very big objects, the sky is projected onto a cylinder that has a radius of 20000 (I need it to be big to get the perspectives to look right).

So I have an odd theory, which is that Near and Far clip when the adaptive box is checked are some kind of "how much to bother' setting. What's clear is that having values of 1-100000 will cause the list issues in a complex comp but not a simple one. By complex, I mean having over 500,000 polygons from say a landscape model in the background.

I have previously posted about polygon break-up on a corridor comp I've been working on. However on my landscape comp I've noticed these new issues and have confirmed that they happen in the corridor comp (which has a maximum size of 500 from the camera position).

Here's an example:

Did the developers mean this? Is it an odd bug? Is there extra coolness that didn't get documented?

Any given wisdom would be appreciated!

Regards

Andy
