Problem running ext scripts (fuscript) on Mac

I'm having trouble connecting to the Fusion runtime from an external script on a Mac. I'm running the latest version of Fusion 8 on a MacBook Pro running El Capitan 10.11.4.
When I run 'fuscript' like this:
I'm not able to connect to a running instance of Fusion inside the interactive console. 'Fusion()' always returns 'nil'. Am I missing something obvious?
