Downscaling BRAW 4k to BRAW FHD

PostSat Nov 11, 2023 12:01 pm

Hey, after some searching around on the internet and trying a few things, i think this is not possible. But, maybe someone knows anything about it.

For an upcoming Project, i am thinking about shooting it in 2.7k or even FHD for various reasons. But on the other hand, i would very much like to have the full size of the BMPCC4k sensor to shoot. I would also love to be able to work with BRAW. I don't see why it shouldn't be possible to shoot in 4k/UHD, downscale to 2.7k or FHD while keeping the BRAW format. I would totally be willing to import it all, convert it and delete the original files. But it does not seem possible.

Does anyone know why?

Hi Silas

Good idea.

You could do this as your post shooting process, no ? Bring all your files in a media reconversion / transcoding tool, for example Adobe Media Encoder
BRAW Studio FREE and Premium for Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, with a brand new Desktop .BRAW Player and Color Grader, as well as an automatic White Balance Color Picker tool

Did you try to convert with the free version of DR?
DaVinci Resolve is very capable even for free, but you need the right hardware!

Thanks for the reply. This is what i'm looking for - a post shooting workflow. But Davinci Resolve, Media Encoder or even BRAW Studio could not export braw files. I am looking for a way to downscale braw to braw.

You can't down-convert 4k braw to FHD braw, but why would you need to?

Just edit the 4k Braw on an HD timeline. The 4k Q5 files aren't much larger than Prores HQ FHD.

Second that. Sorry, I misunderstood your question.
You can’t generate BRAW with any of these programs. But BRAW is not very demanding on the hardware, so you shouldn’t need to convert to another codec.
