50fps footage being forced to play at 25fps

PostFri Oct 18, 2024 6:31 pm

I have footage that was shot at 50fps so that I can slow it down to 25fps for slow motion. My timeline is set to 25fps and Davinci recognises that the footage is 50fps, but when I put the clip on the timeline it sets the frame rate of the clip to 25fps and if I change the speed to 50% it runs the clip at 12.5fps and looks awful.

Use the settings in Clip Attributes and change the fps there before dropping it into a timeline.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Thanks for your reply Uli, I've tried this and it still has the same effect as if I change it in the inspector. I really don't understand why it's not working.

What’s the source of that video?

I'm not sure what you mean by source? The video was shot at 50fps, it's stored on my ssd.

Uli gave you the correct suggestion: Don't use Speed Change. Instead, use Clip Attributes to change the speed to 25fps and it'll play at 25fps. Be warned that the timecode will also change, so the position of the clip in the timeline will probably change as well.

When you put the clip on the timeline it sets the frame rate of the clip to 25fps since the timeline is at 25fps which you chose and when you change (ACTUALLY YOU DON'T NEED THIS CHANGE) the speed to 50% it runs the clip at 12.5fps and looks awful.

Speed Adjustment: You can set the speed as a percentage (e.g., 50% for slow motion) or specify a new frame rate. When you reduce the speed, DaVinci Resolve will play back every frame available at the new speed setting, potentially leading to frame INTERPOLATION if the new speed drops below the original frame rate WHICH IN YOUR CASE HAS DROPPED TO 12.5FPS this is the reason why its awful.

Create a new time line 25fps
import the media it will ask you if you want to change timeline fps, say no. In the media page check if the footage is 50fps or not (it should be 50fps since you selected NOT to change timeline fps) select all clips which are 50fps, right click> clip attributes> change the fps to 25fps
Now add to timeline & the playback will be butter smooth as there is no frame interpolation needed now.

Hope this helps.
