UltraStudio 4K Not Working on New M4 Max Chip

PostFri Nov 08, 2024 2:01 pm

Hey everyone,

I recently upgraded to a Mac with the new M4 Max chip, and I’m trying to get my Blackmagic UltraStudio 4K device up and running. Unfortunately, I’m running into some issues – it’s simply not being recognized by my setup.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

- Downloaded and installed the latest version of the Blackmagic Desktop Video software.
- Verified that I’m using a compatible connection (Thunderbolt, in my case).
- Double-checked that the device works on another machine with a different setup, and it seems fine there.

I’m wondering if anyone else using an M4 Max machine has run into this and found a fix? I’m suspecting it might be a driver compatibility issue since the M4 Max chip is pretty new. Any insights, workarounds, or updates from Blackmagic on compatibility would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Others have experienced similar issues with earlier Mx models, check the forum.

I'm having this issue with M4 Max MacBookPro Sequoia 15.1 and Blackmagic Ultra Studio 4k with Desktop Video 12.3 not being recognised. Anyone having this issue? If there's a solution here, could you kindly point me to it. A search doesn't show anything up.

Maybe you need the new version of desktop studio?

I have the same problem. Latest MacBookPro M4 Max, Ultrastudio 4k, latest Blackmagic desktop driver and I can't get a picture. "No desktop device detected".

Does anyone have a solution? I can't find anything suitable for the M4 Max in the forum.

Thanks in advance!

I'd contact support directly.
I've got the US Monitor 3G, which is on the compatibility list too, working fine here under version 12.4.2.

I too recently bought a Mac Studio M2 Max & tried to connect it up to my old UltraStudio 4K. Since the Studio uses Thunderbolt 3 (looks like a USB-C connector) and the US4K uses Thunderbolt 1 (looks like a mini-display connector), I bought and Apple adapter ($75!!!). No matter what Desktop Video Setup version I tried, none of them worked; the Desktop Video program did not "see" the US4K. The curious part of this was, the Apple system report DID, so the device was communicating, but not via the BMD software, which is required to get the US4K to play my clips via Video ProPresenter.

To verify nothing had happened to the equipment, I connected up an older Mac Mini -- no problem, but the Mini was slow running the older OS software.

Then I realized, if I must use an older computer, why not use my old maxed out Apple Pro "trash can" Mac? It's blazing fast, but cannot upgrade to the newer OS, and it has several of the old Thunderbolt 1 ports.

That's what I did -- I mostly needed the speed, not the newer OS, at least for now. At least now I won't have to purchase a new UltraStudio just because of its comm ports for $2700!

Hi

Just a quick question - did you do a complete clean install or did you transfer/restore the data from your previous Mac?

Take a look at the post I did on how to get the monitor and recorder working - when macOS sees them but not the BMD software.

That’s what worked for me: fresh install on the M1 Pro when I finally went to Sonoma, then Desktop Video, and finally DR. On my older Intel Mac, both the old US Mini Monitor and the new G3 version continued to work when upgraded to Ventura.

I was having the same problem, and found the solution, or rather, found my error! Posting in case it's helpful to anyone else. Here are the steps I took to get my M4 Max computer to recognize my UltraStudio.

1) Use the Uninstall app to remove Desktop Video (found in the Desktop Video folder in Applications).
2) Download & begin installing the latest version of Desktop Video (14.3)
3) During the installation process, you will get a prompt that you need to enable an extension. DO NOT CLICK OK. That was my first mistake. You have to click Open System Settings, then click the slider to turn on the extension manually. Once the slider is set to On, click "Done."
4) You need to do this for a second extension as well. My second mistake was clicking Open System Settings for that one BEFORE I'd hit "Done" on the first extension, thus blocking the second setting from actually opening. I figured that out on like my 10th re-install.
5) Your computer will restart.
6) I then got a notice that the software on my UltraStudio needed to be updated. I let it update, then unplugged and replugged it when directed.
7) Lo and behold, my UltraStudio finally shows up in both Desktop Video and Resolve!

After updating to Desktop Video 14.4 today there was no detection of Ultra Studio HD Mini. iMac Pro Intel, MacOS 15.2

After multiple attempts even on different computers (M3) your workaround saved my day.

Thanks.

At least the update of DR to 19.1.2 has changed nothing here, the US 3G still works under 12.4.2.

Yes it appears as if it sometimes have problems with overwriting older files and the uninstaller do not always delete all files either.

You may be able to do steps 1,2 and then I believe you can skip to:

- System/General/Camera Extensions/, then click the (i) - that will open up the toggle for Black Magic Desktop Video Driver Extension, and toggle that so its ON (Blue)

- Then do the same for System/General/Driver Extensions.app/, then click the (i) - that will open up the toggle for Black Magic Desktop Video Driver Extension.app, and toggle that so its ON (Blue)

Yes, they both appear to have the same name

Let us know if that works for anyone!

Thank you OP, you saved my @$$!

YOU ARE MY HERO.

I'm reporting this up the chain… this is a serious bug in the installer. I just wasted half a day for the second time trying to get my US4KMini to work. Previously I could only get up to v12 to work; presumably because that extension isn't needed/there. But I needed to update, and have run into this yet again.

I'll add two more notes to the list…

1. After the first restart, even after for the very first time in the install seeing that second extension, the US4KMini still wasn't seen -- I checked that same extension (this one):
CleanShot 2024-12-24 at 13.04.34.jpg
the OTHER extension
CleanShot 2024-12-24 at 13.04.34.jpg (138.38 KiB) Viewed 7994 times
and it wasn't enabled, even after enabling it on install!

Then, after another reboot the hardware still didn't show up, but disconnecting and rebooting the US4KMini fixed that. Finally I got the firmware update prompt. And then another US4KMini update was required to get it to show up in the Desktop Video Setup app.

What a journey…

Just wanted to added my sincere thanks for helping me solve my issue as well!

I have a decklink 8k pro in a Sonnet Echo IIIe thunderbolt enclosure that would not show up in the newest version of Desktop Video Setup (14.4) when connecting it to my new Mac Mini M4. Following this installation guide fixed it!

Just wanted to post that in case someone else has this problem.

Yeah that is good to know. I have a DeckLink collecting dust since I retired my Intel Mac Pro. I really wish there were more TB ports on the MacBooks Pros but I think my next Mac will be the Studio model. Then maybe I’ll get a Sonnet and bring the DeckLink back online!

Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting. I have seen issues with connecting TB2 devices to TB3/TB4 ports on the Apple Silicon machines, and my guess is it was a problem with the various drivers allowing the devices to connect (because of Apple securities & permissions problems in Sonoma & Sequoia).

Very glad you got it up and running!

AFAIK, most TB2 devices by BM don't work with Apple silicon.

The o.p. specifically said "UltraStudio 4K," and that's a TB2-only device (and no longer a current product).

This is not the same as the UltraStudio 4K Mini. If they got it to work, I'm impressed.
