New XAVC-L Standard for ARD/ZDF –Interlacing Still Relevant?

PostSat Jun 21, 2025 6:55 am

Hi everyone,
I recently came across information about a new XAVC-L standard for broadcast deliveries to ARD and ZDF (Germany’s public broadcasters), which is based on 1080p50.
Does anyone have more details on this?
Specifically, I’m wondering:
With this new profile (XAVC-L 50 Mbit/s, 1080p50), do we still need to consider interlacing, or is everything now handled as true progressive?
Has anyone already delivered material in this format? Are there any pitfalls or workflow changes to be aware of?

I just delivered a program to them about 2 months ago. I'm pretty sure the spec sheet was still calling for interlaced outputs. I'll take a look at my archive and see what i uploaded.

They say 1080p50 so there's no interlacing. 100% progressive.

I know. Still almost everything is edited in interlaced timelines. So I guess they still need footage that can be converted to interlaced without interline twitter - so we would still have to monitor everything in interlaced.

I just checked my archives. It looks like the spec booklet they sent me a couple of months back is actually from 2018, so they have clearly just come up with some new specs.
On mine it specifically asked for XDCam 25i.

Once again, good reason to always ask for the updated specs.

The specs in my contract say xdcam H 422 1080i as well - only a few weeks old.
I will definitely ask, was only hoping for some experience here.

It's a new, proper 1080p50 format.
If your source is 50p then it's 1:1 map.
If your source is 25p then you can still deliver it to this format and each frame will be repeated twice (needs proper setup in Resolve to avoid fps conversion).
Forget about interlacing and stop looking for a problems which don't exist :D
