No Sidechain Option on Busses?

PostWed Jun 16, 2021 1:39 pm

I often use sidechains when mixing to automatically duck music to my dialogue channels it helps the mix gel together and feel nice and dynamic.

I'm working on a slightly bigger project than usual and I'm wondering what the best options is. I have multiple dialogue channels sent to a bus so I can control them together, as well as multiple music channels which are also sent to another bus.

In the dynamics panel of the individual tracks I see a sidechain option. But it's not to be found on the dynamics panel of the Busses...

Ideally I'll be sidechaining the Music bus via the Dialogue Bus but I can't see a way to achieve this.

Is there a way around this? I'd hate to have to render out sperate sub mixes and not be able to change the parameters of my clips on each channel.

Patch the Dialogue and Music Busses to two Timeline Tracks in Thru.
Save the configuration as a Preset for use with New Timelines.

Bus Assign :
A1 = Dia A > B2 = DIAL BUS
A2 = Dia B > B2 = DIAL BUS
A3 = Music > B3 = MUSIC BUS
A4 = DIALOGUE TRACK > B1 = MIX
A5 = MUSIC TRACK > B1 = MIX

Patch IO:
B2 = DIAL BUS > A4 = DIALOGUE TRACK
B3 = MUSIC BUS > A5 = MUSIC TRACK

Path Settings:
A4 = DIALOGUE TRACK > Thru
A5 = MUSIC TRACK > Thru

Fairlight Dynamics Processor:
A4 = DIALOGUE TRACK > Fairlight Compressor > Send > B4 = Sidechain
A5 = MUSIC TRACK > Fairlight Compressor > Listen

Presets Library (Fairlight menu):
Fairlight Configuration Preset > Ducking Template

This is a beautiful workaround, sir. I'm surprised there aren't more comments complimenting you on this. Thank you!
