Big Sur breaks UltraStudio mini Monitor??

PostThu Jul 08, 2021 11:40 pm

I can not get my Mini monitor to work, called support and they said the latest build of Big Sur has broken it. I see no one else commenting on this so wondering if this is correct? BM Desktop app does not recognize it at all.

Thanks, Mark

I'm having the same issue. Both with an older model using the apple thunderbolt 3 to tb2 converter (which used to work) and now with a brand new 3G model. TB3 straight to the computer.

the software will see the device and even works in both resolve and premiere right after installing desktop video 12.1.
After restarting the computer it does not recognize it anymore.

When I first installed I authorized the BM software in the Security panel, but cannot find what privacy section it is in to ensure that it's still authorized after a restart.

This is beyond frustrating. I really hope this doesn't turn into pointing fingers back and forth between BM and Apple.

Instructions for Macs.
1. Unplug the mini monitor & Uninstall desktop video using the uninstaller in the application folder.
2. Restart the computer
3. Open system preferences > Security & Privacy, unlock it. Plug the mini monitor in.
4. Reinstall Desktop Video 12.1. As soon as you do, an option might appear in the security system prefs window asking to allow Desktop video to control the computer or something. Click allow. Note, the installation might prompt you to restart the computer. Check system prefs for this prompt before you restart, and if it's not there, go ahead and restart.
5. Open system preferences > Security & Privacy, unlock it. Allow the driver in that window if the prompt is there and didn't appear before, then
6. Security & Privacy > General > Accessibility and add Desktop Video to the apps that can control the computer.
7. Restart.

I have it working in Big Sur with Desktop video 12.1 by doing the above.

Re: Big Sur breaks UltraStudio mini Monitor??

Just purchased a new Mini Monitor 4K and Sonnet Echo Express SEL enclosure and ran into the same problem on my Intel MacBook Pro (2019 16-inch). I tried this trick, but it's not working for me. I didn't receive any security prompts during install or after reboot.

Ironically, the card & enclosure work fine on my M1 MacBook Pro.

The worst of it is I contacted tech support and they're telling me the Mini Monitor 4K is not supported on Intel Macs in Big Sur. I'm quite angry if this is indeed true. The Desktop Video 12.1 Release Notes state:

The following products are supported on Mac OS Big Sur:
M1 and Intel Macs:
- DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K

As well as some products that are Intel Macs only. However, the support tech told me:

I can confirm that the DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K is not supported on a Intel system using MacOS Big Sur and Desktop Video 12.1

The Supported devices listed in the system requirements for Desktop Video 12.1 is split between 2 sections, the first section listing M1 supported devices and the second listing supported devices on Intel systems.

We apologize as this section lists M1 and Intel in the same field which has caused some confusion, however I can confirm if using MacOS Big Sur, an M1 system is required.

Otherwise, support of the DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K remains on an Intel Mac system running MacOS Catalina and below.

This smells of BS to me. Can anyone confirm they have a working Mini Monitor 4K on Intel Big Sur?

Can anyone confirm that these steps have worked for them?

The installation doc says nothing about the Accessibility Requirement, and Support has been stubbornly sticking to the script as per install docs, which, in my experience, which has been incredibly frustrating.

Pretty sure that's not correct.

Open the Mac Terminal app, and enter this:

sudo kextutil /Library/Extensions/BlackmagicIO.kext

It will ask for a password. That should be your Admin user password.

Now does it work?

We have to make it clear if this is the older UltraStudio Mini Monitor with TB2 or the new one with "3G" added and a TB3 port. The latter works fine here under Big Sur 11.5.2.

Although, on restart it forgot the parameters. I had to go back into Terminal and do it again!! Will this be a regular workaround?

Also... the UltraStudio HD mini still not recognized by Wirecast 14.3.1!!!

For now, you may have to enter the "sudo kextutil /Library/Extensions/BlackmagicIO.kext" after each restart.

This should be addressed in the next Desktop Video update, but I don't have a timeframe for when that will be available.

Just want to add my voice in here. After purchasing an M1 to replace my aging MacBook, I discovered my UltraStudio Mini Monitor didn't work with the new system. Bought a 3G model (which still had residual issues that have been present with these for a long time) and in a matter of months it is now not functioning with latest Premiere. Please fix...

As I said in another thread, the only way I can get Desktop video to show is by disabling security and running 11.7.

Should I enable security before or after uninstalling 11.7 and installing 12.2? As much as I dislike Apple's security chip on the MacPro2019, I'd still rather not run without it enabled.

Desktop Video 12.2 should deal with the issue.

Uninstall 11.7, enable the security and install 12.2.

After the 12.2 install, it should ask you to restart.

After the restart, open Security Preferences, and it should tell you that system software from "Blackmagic Desktop Video Driver Extension.app" was blocked from loading. Click the Allow button, and you should be good to go.

Hi Dwaine,

Unfortunately it didn't and now also the workaround in the terminal doesn't work anymore

Security Preferences asked me to restart two times and still no desktop video.

-Edit 3-
I rolled back to 11.7 did the terminal thingy and the system asked me to update the hardware. So I did, unplugged and plugged in again and now it works (on 11.7) not going to update the driver for a while.

After speaking with Dmitry in tech support, re-enabled the security chip in terminal and then installed Desktop Video 12.2. Restarted. Followed the system prompts to authorize the BMD extension in the Security control panel, and now recognizes the card. Dmitry explained that the 12.2 drivers have been rewritten to work with Big Sur and Monterey.

Dwaine Maggart

Any plans to update UltraStudio without the kernel extensions which most certainly would solve all of these problems.

I am trying to move a system from 12.1 where Desktop Video was working, and broke as soon as I moved to 12.2.

Surely BM had time to plan for the transition away from kernel extensions which would have helped greatly with these ongoing issues.

I really don't want to have to go into firmware to disable settings designed to enhance system security.

Thanks in advance.

I have a small observation to share.

When I run the 12.1 installer on an M1 Mac (w/Big Sur) it installs successfully, and UltraStudio Mini appears in Desktop Video. After removing 12.1 and installing 12.2, I can no longer see the UltraStudio Mini device.

The 12.1 installer seems to successfully install the driver at /Library/Extensions/BlackmagicIO.kext, while 12.2 does not.

Any thoughts?

So, we are referring to the UltraStudio Monitor with TB 2 and an adapter here?
Since the UltraStudio Monitor 3G with TB 3 is working without a flaw on my MacBook M1 Pro.

Just thought I'd chime in and say it is working for me on my M1 system. No more color grading to the program monitor window in Premiere. Yay.

It's nice to have output again to an SDI monitor but I'm stunned that they still have not fixed the incorrect frame rate on down convert in Premiere - an old, documented issue from years ago that has plagued anyone who outputs to a 1080 monitor. Yes, I haven't replaced my color grading monitor but given it's a $5k screen I wanted to get a few more years out of it yet... ;)

That's correct - 12.2 on a 2020 M1 Mac, latest version of Premiere (2022, v22.0) but checked with the previous version on 12.2 and video output also worked on the last version of Premiere I was using before upgrading (v15.4.1)

Re: Big Sur breaks UltraStudio mini Monitor??

I seem to be having a similar issue with my UltraStudio Mini Recorder (Thunderbolt 2).

I was on a streaming job on Wednesday 27th October, when during setup I noticed both of my UltraStudio Mini Recorders weren't showing up in the Desktop Video 12.1 preferences pane on my Macbook Pro (mid-2015, Intel) running 11.6.1 (which I installed on Monday 25th October). I tried different ports and cables just in case on both devices.

Thinking I need an update I checked the support website and noticed a new 12.2 update, however, after downloading and installing the UltraStudio Mini Recorders still weren't being recognised despite the LED being on and the device being recognised and correctly identified in the Mac's System Raport under the Thunderbolt tab.

The job was saved by a simple HDMI to USB capture card I bought ages ago on Amazon which doesn't need any drivers at all. After getting home I reinstalled the new 12.2 software around 3 times making sure it's completely uninstalled, restarted and installed correctly by allowing the Blackmagic Design developer in security preferences.

I also tried calling Blackmagic support twice over the last two weeks, however, I only managed to get one call back which unfortunately didn't have any answers for me and hasn't followed up yet.

All I can say is that on Desktop Video 12.1 and MacOS 11.6 everything was working fine and ever since both updates I am left with two devices that are unusable which are absolutely vital to my work. They work, however, the software has rendered them useless and someone needs to look into this urgently please.

Thanks,
Jacek

Not sure why you are blaming Desktop Video 12.2 for breaking things, when the start of your message says it all stopped working while you had Desktop Video 12.1 installed?

If you uninstall Desktop Video 12.2, using the Uninstall app in the Desktop Video folder in Applications, then install 12.1 again, does that work?

Make sure after installing either version, that you allow access in Mac Preferences - Security and Privacy - General tab.

Hi @Dwaine,

I'm blaming 12.1 and 12.2 for not being prepared for a simple security update that was 11.6.1 as it's not even a full OS change to Monterey 12.0.1 which I would partly understand.

Nope both 12.1 and 12.2 do not work under 11.6.1, however, 12.1 was working under 11.6.0 as well as the previous 11.5.2 version.

As mentioned in my previous post, Blackmagic Design is allowed access every time the software is updated or reinstalled so that is not the issue here I'm afraid. The BlackmagicIO.kext is also missing from the extensions folder so no way to run a command in Terminal.

There doesn't seem to be a fix for this at the moment and I would appreciate feeding this back to your developers as clearly I'm not the only one with similar issues and an update is needed ASAP.

I was running 11.6 on my iMac with Desktop Video 12.2 using an UltraStudio 4K.

I updated to 11.6.1 as well as the other app thing it said needed updating (something to do with IOS apps). Rebooted. All still working.

Uninstalled Desktop Video 12.2 and installed 12.1. OK'd the Security and Privacy message, rebooted and all working OK.

Uninstalled Desktop Video 12.1 and installed 12.2. Answered the Security and Privacy thing, rebooted, and no UltraStudio 4K. Looked in Security and Privacy, and it said it blocked the Blackmagic driver. Clicked the lock icon and unlocked, clicked OK to the security message, and the UltraStudio 4K popped in.

Restarted again, and all still OK.

So aside from the unexpected need to do the Security and Privacy thing after the 12.2 install restart, all is behaving as expected.

There is no BlackmagicIO.kext if you have Desktop Video 12.2 installed, as it uses a different driver method.

Yes, I had that, and clicked OK, and it worked. Or perhaps it worked after the restart when I had to go into Security and Privacy the second time and click OK again.

@Shawn: I'm told Premiere only works with Desktop Video 12.2 on an M1 Mac. Is that what you are using?

That's correct - 12.2 on a 2020 M1 Mac, latest version of Premiere (2022, v22.0) but checked with the previous version on 12.2 and video output also worked on the last version of Premiere I was using before upgrading (v15.4.1)

I guess I need to amend this.... SDI is working for output in Premiere, but HDMI is not. Once again, another quirk with frame rates has appeared. As an example, if it's 4K/23.98 material, it'll get converted to 1080/25p on the outputs during down convert for some reason. This is a know issue at BMD and I've had an open support ticket on it since like 2019 :/

In this case, I now notice that if source footage or sequences have a 23.98 time base, they'll appear both on the SDI monitor and the HDMI monitor in my studio, again with a weird conversion to 25p. But, if it's 29.97 timebase, it'll only appear on the SDI output. For instance, I have a broadcast timeline with 1080/29.97 specs. The output on my SDI monitor reads 1080/29.97p while the HDMI monitor goes blank.

It's still not working here either.

After deinstallation and reinstallation, I can check the Security&Privacy box for the software.
But after a reboot, the card is not detected and I can't see any BMD software in the Privacy tab.

What's wrong?

Did a fresh install of the latest Desktop Video release (12.2.1) and I still can't get the UltraStudio Monitor 3G to work. This is getting frustrating.
I do the security thing, and the restart, but Desktop Video shows no device connected. The UltraStudio is on (little light and heat) and the Mac can see it (as per system information panel thunderbolt tab) which makes me think this is a BM software or Mac OS permissions issue.

Are you connecting through a hub or directly? It's working here on a MacBook Pro M1.

And it's the G3 model? The older one doesn't work with M1 machines.
