Cloud Pod... Would it help?

PostFri May 13, 2022 10:30 pm

I love the idea of the Cloud Pod, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it and would appreciate some thoughts.
This is because I'm a digital nomad, so I don't have access to an ethernet connection. For internet access I use my own MiFi, or the WiFi in the place I'm working (internet cafe, library, etc).

Would the Pod even work without an ethernet connection? Or, could I just connect it to my laptop?
Thanks

I am by no means an expert on the cloud pod, but I have been working with it the past couple days.

I would say in your case no, it wouldn't be of use unless you plugged into a wired network.

The main benefit IMHO is to turn one or two SSDs into shareable network storage to work on the same project simultaneously. Over my 10 gig network switch, I get about 3-3.5 gpbs because it has to interface over an older USB protocol.

This is still much better than a gig connection though and seems to be a good solution for 2-3 person teams.

I think the benefit of the cloud pod over just using the desktop app is the control of proxy-only uploads/downloads. With proxy only turned on, you can have it ignore sending/receiving big camera originals. I would love a 3mpbs proxy option though to cut files size down further.

It would be nice with we could raid 0 two USB drives together using the pod.
That would probably bring it closer to 10 Gb limits.

Love your YouTube channel, Chad.

i find the cloud pod to be an absolute failure due to the slow usb implementation
and thus refrain from buying it.

It's not a failure if you are using Proxy media.
