Noise Reduction Processing - buying a laptop

PostWed Aug 17, 2022 7:50 pm

I am looking for a new laptop.

I use DR for drone footage mostly (4k) and some noise reduction with low light clips.

First question - does noise reduction use more CPU RAM or GPU RAM? I am trying to decide between two laptops that offer different configurations.

First Machine (Alienware x15 R2)
i9 CPU, max of 32 GB of ram, but I can get a 3080ti with a whoopping 16 GB of GPU ram.

Or, I can get different machine with these configurations (Alienware m15 R7):
i7 CPU, max of 64 GB, with the 3080ti (16 GB GPU ram)
i9 CPU, max of 64 GM, with the 3080 (8 GB GPU ram)

I love the body of the X series, but it maxes out at 32 GB of ram....maybe the 16 GB of GPU ram would help?

Or, I can just get the lower grade body of the M series, and get the 64 GB of internal RAM.

Only GPU RAM matters for temporal NR. So, 8 GB might be tight for 4K.
CPU RAM matters most for Fusion. But if any H.265 as 10 bit 4:2:2 is in your future, definitely get an 11th or 12th generation Intel iGPU.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

That is helpful. I knew that CPU RAM helped with rendering so that's why I was considering going with 64 GB instead of 32, but if the temporal NR is primarily done from GPU RAM, then that provides me with more options and I may opt for the Alienware X series instead of the M series.
