Play doesn't always play; keyboard or mouse!

This has been driving me NUTS lately, and I can't not figure out any rhyme or reason to this. Sometimes it's constant, and sometimes it's never.

UPDATE: The issue appears to have been due to a third party text macro from MotionArray, however I'm not quick to blame them — I'm new to Motion Array and I've definitely had this issue many times before, just never this badly. Disabling those titles on the timeline appears to have cleared up the issue. These were pretty simple titles, too. This is nuts.

Hitting play with the spacebar or even the play button doesn't play. You see the play button go red. You see the sound meters jump. But nothing plays. It's… insane.

I had this on my Intel Mac Pro and now have it on my M2 Max MacBook Air. It's happened for ages; I don't know if it predates Resolve 18 or not, but it's been around for a while. And this certainly isn't a processing power problem; this happens on single clips or ProRes with no effects on them.

I'm playing off the Cloud Store but can see from the interface I'm connected at 10G and nowhere near the limit — it'll play 4x streams no problem, once it plays.

You can tell when I hit the space bar because the play button goes red and then black again as I keep hitting it, and you see the meters spike when I try to play. oh man this is really bad right now… switching to proxy makes no difference. And I realized (I think) that when it's stuck, the timeline viewer hasn't updated yet. Yeah, when it's stuck not playing, if I scrub, nothing is updating in the timeline viewer either.

I've tried all options of Fusion cache and Render Cache.

Another thing I just noticed is that the Playback monitor (which is via an UltraStudio 4K Mini) can go black when this is happening. That's new but it's definitely related. I've tried disabling monitoring but the same issue happens.

I've rebooted the machine… no help. I made sure no track-wide audio enhancements (i.e. noise removal) were on… disabled. The CPU and GPU are doing next to nothing when Resolve is stuck like this:

Is this a corrupted preferences thing?

Bypassing Color and/or Fusion doesn't fix it either.

Aaaaaand Resolve just crashed while scrubbing. There's something seriously f'd up happening here.

Here's an interesting clue. I had Fusion Memory Cache set to Auto, and Render Cache set to Smart. I manually tagged a clip Render Cache Fusion Output > On because it was not caching. It wasn't rendering (bar was stuck at like 5% blue), and tried scrubbing… and couldn't. It seems like when I can't play back or scrub, rendering is locked out, too.

Jesus that's depressing… I just spent the last half hour doing a complete backup, uninstall and reinstall following Chadwick's excellent tutorial https://creativevideotips.com/tutorials ... resolve-18 and within moments of being up and running again, the problem was there.

I just don't even know what to do anymore. I've been trying to finish what's frankly a pretty simple edit for the last several hours and I've gotten nowhere. It's maddening!!

Check this out… I was playing and it was going fine until it hit this itty bitty un-rendered graphic:

That little blip caused the timeline viewer to freeze up for probably 30 seconds before it let go and I could play again.

1. The same thing happens when I disconnect everything from my laptop and just run off proxy media.
2. The same thing happens in the Cut page; normally I'm in the Edit page
3. I'm working from Blackmagic Cloud. I exported and imported the project locally; no difference.
4. I copied everything to a new timeline; no difference

I THINK I IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM!!

Since the issues seemed to be around rendering, I decided to delete the title that I had in place. There were three of these, all from Motion Array. I'm a new user of Motion Array and as I said in the beginning this is NOT a new problem, but I've never ever seen it this bad.

If the text macro is actually the problem, then this is something that shows up a LOT; I've just never seen it this badly before.

I made a copy of the timeline and removed all those titles and it seems to be playing fine. As I'd said earlier I had bypassed fusion rendering and that didn't fix it. I now also realize that simply disabling those three titles appears to resolve the issue as well.

But there's more going on here… now that I'm in proxy mode, my native Text+ titles are showing offline. Sometimes. They might show up, or the might not, but they are not behaving properly.

Resolve's got some issues… *sigh*
