Clean 4K output for Macbook M2 Max

PostWed Mar 15, 2023 5:50 am

I want to buy an affordable output device for my Macbook M2 Max, equivalent in price and capability to the internal Decklink Mini 4K, which product would you recommend…? I have been looking at the Ultrastudio 3D, but that is not a 4K device, right…? The one above that (Ultrastudio 4K mini) is ten times more expensive, is there really nothing closer to the Decklink 4K price tag if I want 4K output…?

95% of my grading is 6K BRAW from the Pocket 6K pro and 5.1K prores from Mavic 3C on a 4K timeline…

Best regards, Michael Nilsson

I've been asking about this the last year and a half.
I'm hopin t hey'll announce something at NAB.
Otherwise, you have to get a decklink 4k, and put it into an external case. Total cost is about $500

Or use a cheap Mini Monitor 3G and check your colors in HD.
My desaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

I don't want a mini monitor 3G.
I want a 4k mini monitor.

Well, then use Mark's advice. While the new Macs don't support eGPUs, there are several reports that you can use other cards in an external box. So, go find a used eGPU case and put any 4K card into it.

Or wait what NAB will bring.

OK, so Mini Monitor 3G is only a question of it being HD in monitoring, not when exporting, then it might work for my needs, but I hope NAB brings us a device so that we can monitor in 4K with a better pricetag...

Henchman: Thanks for the tip, I will take it under consideration but I view it as the last option...

Yes, we monitor all the time in HD and export in UHD.

I concur that a proper USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt 4K solution with a price in the general ballpark as the PCI solution is sorely needed from Blackmagic.

This has been one of the factors that are still keeping me from jumping into a MacStudio solution.
