Mac M1 Max - Ultrastudio Extreme 3 Playback

PostWed Mar 15, 2023 7:12 pm

Hi,

Mac Studio M1 Max 2022 Monterey 12.6.3 - Same thing happened when the Mac was running Ventura.
Premiere Pro 23.2.0
Ultra Studio Extreme 3
Thunderbolt 3.0 Connection (I've tried three different cables with the same result - Belkin 2.0M and Anker 1.6ft)
Driver 12.4.2 was downgraded to 12.3.1 this morning with the same result.

Issue:

Premiere Pro timeline/source window playback will randomly stop. It will still allow me to move the playhead in the timeline/source window - although, I get no playback. The playback window and external playback monitor will be stuck on the frame of video in which the issue/crash occurred.

Simple sequences and clips in source window - ProRes and MXF AVC footage result in this. Editors have complained this happens with typical edit sequences also.

This is bad way of audio monitoring.
Audio should be taken from SDI/HDMI output of the card, not through OSX CoreAudio path.

You can check in OSX audio setup if sample rate is set to 48K. If not try changing to 48K.

Hi,

Slightly confused regarding the audio monitoring. The speakers are fed directly from the XLR Outputs on the back of the Blackmagic Ultra Studio - is that not what those outputs are for?

Audio is set to 48.0kHz

Thanks,
Michael

That is just the driver naming convention by Adobe. He has the correct configuration to get audio out from the UltraStudio HDMI or SDI.

Hmmm...
There is also setting in Playback tab. I remember having similar issue few years ago.

Hmmm....

I think it's best to leave ALL "Audio Hardware" set to "System Default" settings, and change your "Primary Audio Device" in "Playback" to "Blackmagic Playback."

Selecting ANY BM devices in "Audio Hardware" will cause problems in my experience, poor playback performance at worst, sync issue at the very least.

Good luck,
J

Well, yes that's my suggestion as well.
Setting it up the way as above is different than SDI/HDMI monitoring as far as I remember (long time ago since I used Premiere with BM card).

BM Support have confirmed they have replicated the issue on their end. Meaning this is likely a driver issue.

Same problem here.
Not with Ultrastudio Extreme 3 but with Ultrastudio 4K Mini and with Ultrastudio 3G Monitor.
See here

and here

This is the first time I've read that BM Support has replicated the issue.
I hope they can fix it.

I am having this exact same problem with an UltraStudio Mini HD and an M1 Pro MBP (Ventura 13.4). Playback constantly freezing while editing, restarting Premiere fixes the issue temporarily.

Is there a known stable driver for this problem yet?

To further isolate the problem, the freezes seem to be happening with H.264 .mp4 media, specifically when playing it back or loading it into the 'source' window of Premiere Pro. I'm using AVC-Intra100 1080i sequences and playback in the sequence is working fine via the Ultrastudio.

Is that the UltraStudio Monitor 3G? Only that version is compatible.
My desaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

MacOS 13.7, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, MacOS 14.7
