Cintel - 16mm 2 Pass HDR scanning problems

PostFri Sep 29, 2023 7:27 pm

Our Cintel Scanner, with the 16mm HDR gate, is unable to capture HDR without a "halo" effect.

Latest Fimware, Cintel Drivers, Video Desktop, and Resolve. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Paul,

From the supplied jpg, it looks like the 2nd pass HDR is not aligned to the first.

For us to verify can you supply me a short 5-10 sec sample clip with both the <clip>.cri and matching hidden .HDR folder <clip>.cri's via a DropBox?

16mm stability can be challenging, it is important to verify the scanner has been 'calibrated' and LED levels correctly set, as well as verifying the (x) stability is targeted correctly.

As a work round, you can rename the .HDR folder and the clip will revert to 'standard dynamic range' clip (minus the halo).

Thanks

Hi Gavin -

Here is a link to a short capture with Cintel 5 and Resolve 18.6.:

There was no issue with older Cintel 4.1 and Resolve 17. This was submitted by my predecessor for more info:

Hi Paul,

From the supplied clip, the stability is in constant offset to the first pass, can you supply a full screen grab of Resolve capture pane of this film, to allow understanding of your user setup better.

In addition a single frame .cri of a 35mm print image with stability turned OFF will help.

Thanks

Here is a screenshot of the capture. Dont see how this is helpful. The other images show the difference and the pixels moved to line up the HDR scan I do not have a 35mm .cri file to provide. We scan almost entirely 16mm.

Please provide the recommended Resolve Version, Cintel Version, and Desktop Video Version for successful 16mm HDR scans. I have submitted a ticket also and no help there. We have had this issue for 10 or so months and can hardly believe there is no fix for this. Does a technician need to come out to look at our machine? If there is no fix please let me know.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the cri’s, there are several things that will affect X stability, particularly with 16mm as we have less vertical references when compared to 35mm.
Cintel 5.0 and Resolve 18.6 is fine for your requirement.

The supplied clip has focus just off peak, in addition to the stability target zone just off perf crest, as well as a potential gate alignment issue (TBC).

To ensure optimum scans (subject to source material)

1/ Ensure scanner is calibrated on each session- {User manual page 26}
2/ Focus peak on the film grain (not image) - {User manual page 18}
3/ Perform Density minimum ‘Auto black/white’ on key frame - {User manual page 28}
4/ Review X stability target region - {User manual page 30}

5/ Capture clip & review

My request for a single image grab (CRI) of 35mm Print (X stability disabled) is to permit us to evaluate your optical mechanical alignment, as 35mm is our master datum. Appreciate you are predominately a 16mm user, but a 35mm image (X stability disabled) will allow us to correlate your 16mm setup."
