Resolve-related hardware question - UltraStudio / Decklink

PostTue Sep 26, 2023 3:48 pm

This is related to the hardware side of using Resolve. I'm rebuilding my editing suite to include a clean feed to an LG C2. I'm on a Win11 laptop with thunderbolt.

First, I picked up an UltraStudio Monitor 3G. Worked great but I quickly realized I needed 4k. It actually connected and was discovered by the Blackmagic hardware setup tool. Great!

So I got a Decklink 4k mini card and a Sonnet pcie external box. Put it all together and...nothing. The hardware setup tool can't see it. Tried the 3G again and same thing, the setup tool can't see it. Device management does NOT see the Sonnet but it DOES see the 3G. I believe this is a BM card issue and not a Sonnet issue, mostly because the thunderbolt chain successfully passes a signal out to my other monitor. It seems that the only part not working is the card(?)

I'm sure there are a thousand variables, but is there some sort of secret sauce to getting the thunderbolt connection to work with the hardware setup tool? My thinking is if I can get the 3G working again, I'll be most of the way home with the Sonnet.

I did get the 3G working again but for some reason it doesn't show up in the approved TB Devices list. The Decklink Mini Monitor 4k still isn't working though. There doesn't seem to be any software other than the utility used to set up the settings, there is nothing on the BM website and the card doesn't have any sort of documentation with it. Plugging a card in should not take days.

I'll continue talking to myself here in hopes that it helps someone else later on.

In further communications with the various tech supports (not including BM as they are the only ones to not respond), it appears that TB4 can not be used with a dedicated GPU. I find this to be likely wildly incorrect information as (I believe) the UltraStudio 4k mini uses TB4 and also uses the gpu. My computer's manufacturer says that only the CPU can interact through the TB4 port. I'm not privvy to the interactions between the CPU and the GPU so maybe it's possible that the UltraStudio works off of the CPU but with the GPU doing to work INTO the CPU?

Another update

Supposedly (per laptop mfg tech support) i9-12900H laptops can not use GPU via thunderbolt. Presumably this would prevent the UltraStudio 4k mini from working. It is a shame BM does not bother with these kinds of details.

Also supposedly, Win11 thunderbolt drivers are integrated onto the CPU. If this is true, it seems like a ridiculously terribly idea.

So they are copying Apple ;-)
DaVinci Resolve is very capable even for free, but you need the right hardware!

Studio 18.6.3, MacOS 12.7.1
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro
Speed Editor, UltraStudio Monitor 3G, iMac 2017

Maybe, the US4k isn’t a GPU. I’ve used the US4k with both i9 (I9-9880H) laptops and m2 on Mac. I doubt the issue is a system limitation. I’d delete every file with Blackmagic in the name and start over.

Good Luck
