Hello,

Can there be an update to the Desktop Video Setup where you have the option to display a 9x16 on the broadcast monitor? The company I am working for is starting to do a lot of 9x16 videos.

This is a good point. There is a new Network launching called Quibi that the deliverables are a 16x9 and a 9x16.

Bump bump bump!

We like our UltraStudios, and we already do a lot of our deliverables for broadcast -- and re-editorialize the broadcast version for social platforms. It would be great if the UltraStudio's already connected to our broadcast monitors could display pillarboxed vertical video on the same monitor.

Maybe we could even have a second monitor that's rotated to vertical. I'm even just wondering what the established solutions are, if there's an established way of reviewing vertical video at all.

There is no established way as those aspects are not specified in any SDI etc specs.
It could be done (with need of rotating the screen), but would require special coding in BM drivers. I doubt they have time for this as it still represent fractional portion of BM cards users.
Other solution is to use UHD frame for 9x16 HD videos.
You may be more lucky with other cards like Matrox or Magewel.
I'm sure in eg. Nuke it should be easy to do even with BM card.

We have done a bunch of these using decllink SDI out to a broadcast monitor and HDMI tp a TV. All good if you set up the timeline and image size correctly.

BUMP THIS PLEASE!

More and more, we are delivering social assets for TV shows, movies, and especially all commercial work. In various aspect ratios, ie. 1:1, 4:5, 9:16 are the most common.

While we work, our workaround is to do rough cuts using various masks to pillarbox these aspect ratios within a 16:9 aspect ratio, so that the reference monitor and client monitor display it without stretching it out to fit it's screen.

Then we have to conform to final spec later, which scaling is never the same and you have to basically start over and do it right when it should have been done right from the beginning. It's additional steps in a workflow that could be easily solved by firmware. Time suck!

It would be so awesome if our capture playback cards could do send the correct aspect ratio of our sequences to our various reference monitors for viewing. This is NLE and software agnostic, we have this issue in Davinci Resolve, FCPX, Adobe PPro and AE, etc etc.

Please and thanks!

I can confirm that this is possible if you set the timeline and monitoring settings correctly for each timeline.
