Cubix, OSX, Resolve 9 and GTX680. Probably one for the devs?

Do you have questions about Desktop Video, Converters, Routers and Monitoring?

Cubix, OSX, Resolve 9 and GTX680. Probably one for the devs?

PostMon Sep 17, 2012 5:02 pm

So after the little Quadro 4000 incident I'm looking at walking the Cubix path Anyone here using a GPU-Xpander Desktop 4 with their OSX Resolve rig? I was thinking about starting out with one GTX680 and take it from there. How much does performance improve with each added 680 in a config like that? Linearly, twice the cards twice the performance?

How about going for 690s instead? More cores (and heat) but worth the cost and would it even work?

I don't really see how it could scale indefinite since the expander takes 1x16 lane and extends it out to 4 slots in a chassis. Doesn't that x16 lane hate to handle all four cards so that each card runs in what would be a x4 lane?

Can one mix cards in the Cubix and resolve recognize them and uses them? I mean if we start out with one 680 can we later add one 690 and one K5000 and they all work together like one extremely happy, and rather hot and steamy, family?

The host would be a Mid 2010 12 core MacPro with 24GB ram, 10.8.1 or 10.8.2 (out any day now...).

Enlighten me! :geek: :D

Mac Pro 2.93GHz/16GBRAM/OS Lion
- ATI 5770 (dual Apple 30" Cinema
- ATTO R680 SAS (GTECH eS Pro 12TB RAID)
- Avid HBA (Nitris DX)
- CUBIX HBA (CUBIX)

CUBIX XPANDER DESKTOP 4
- Quadro 4000
- Quadro 4000
- RED ROCKET
- BMD DeckLink Extreme

Runs great!
Cant comment on the GTX680 since at time of purchase we only knew of the hack versions.

Thanks Eric

Have you always had two q4k in it or did you purchase one later on? Curious on how performance scales.

Good question.
I dont see the differences between one and two.
At playback I will get the initial red then green for 24fps.
I inquired about the Candle Test here and no one got back to me.
If you know of any app that tests GPU, please pass it on.
I would have loaded 2 to 3 GTX in that CUBIX but we need the ROCKET and DeckLink.
Btw, Ill be testing a Quadro 4000 in a Sonnet Echo Express Pro and Retina soon.
Now I hope that works :)

Oh okay. Let's hope someone of the devs are here and can enlighten us. =)

What's the candle test?

Does resolve report three q4k's in prefs/system info? What does OSX say about those quadros in SYtem Report =>Graphics Display. What PCI Lane Width does it report for them when you click on them?

Thanks

The CUBIX will always show 16x. Its a shared PCI lane.
And you cant go over 3 GPU cards on one set-up under Mac OS X.
Not sure about Windows.
Linux on the other hand I guess its more?

The Candle test was an xml file where you test the Nodes and GPU of your system.
basically you keep adding nodes and check your fps?
Ive never tried it and found the xml but it requires images attached for testing.

Hello, I see you are using the R680. We recently bought a mid 2012 mac pro, and want to buy an R680, but I heard of fan speed noise isue. Do you have the same problem? Does it bother you?
Thanks in advance
