Blackmagic eGPU Pro Upgrade

PostThu Feb 20, 2020 9:03 pm

Hi,

I will soon be in the market for a Blackmagic eGPU Pro. Are there any upgrades to the GPU expected in the near future (i.e., 16gb vram option, newer GPU, etc.)?

If any, they would be announced at NAB.

But if you want an upgradable eGPU, why not go for the eGFX Breakaway?

Indeed new eGPU with 16 GB vRAM would be epic. I however suspect that Apple wants to kill eGPU ecosystem and thus the collab with Blackmagic design.

This behaviour is really dark side of Apple. They are killing, neglecting their own products to maximize cash intake.

He's overpriced Blackmagic EGPU for whatever you get and as far as I know you can't upgrade it. You're stuck with that card when you purchase it.
In fact I am building the live streaming setup of my church and the Blackmagic eGPU has been specially avoided. We have a Sonnet TB3 chassis instead, which powers our choice of card and enables us to upgrade it if we wish.
I believe eGPU ideas are quite popular (given the restrictions that Apple has on most of their machines in the first place). What is NOT popular is unupgradable, too expensive equipment.

I believe the days of eGPUs are numbered, even if using one myself.
The next generation of Macs won’t need one (and neither support one), while on the PC side you can find laptops with a pretty decent GPU without dragging around an extra box
