Desktop Video 11.5 a NO-GO for Decklink Mini 4k

PostSat Feb 22, 2020 1:51 pm

Decklink Mini 4k card no longer recognized after update to Desktop Video 11.5.
Delete 11.5 and reinstall 11.4 and Decklink Mini 4k card once again shows up and displays fine.

Anyone else seeing this problem with 11.5?

Thanks for confirmation of issue Johan. Was starting to wonder if the problem with 11.5 and Decklink Mini 4k was specific to my workstation. Now I know it's likely a problem with the new driver.

Same here, I had to reinstall previous version in order for it to work again.

Mine worked fine with both Resolve Studio 16.1.2, Fusion 16 and Premiere/Encore CS6, but SD timelines were corrupted on the HDMI display (I don't use the SDI). Yes, I still do a lot of work on updating older SD material on DVD, so SD out still matters to me!

The SD timelines from the Adobe apps look like a thumbnail was stretched to fit the display and playback on the display was stuttering despite playing back normally in the editor window (after all, it's SD for God's sake).

Reverting back to 11.4 did a firmware update on the card on re-install of the earlier version, which I thought was interesting as I didn't remember an update to the card when I originally installed 11.5. I didn't try SD timelines in Resolve as all that stuff is sent to me as or is already Adobe CS6 projects. HD timelines (720 & 1080) seemed to work fine in Premiere, just the SD timesline were not displayed properly with 11.5.

Desktop Video 11.6 still nonfunctional for DeckLink Mini 4k card.
Windows Device Manager shows the card is installed and functioning.
Desktop Video Setup shows error message "No Desktop Video Device Detected"

When I then remove Desktop Video 11.6 and reinstall version 11.4 everything functions just fine. Desktop Video Setup sees the DeckLink Mini 4k and the card outputs video and audio to grading monitor and client monitor.

There are definitely some problems with version 11.5 and 11.6

I had that problem with previous editions and solved it this way - enable Blackmagic Software Updater in Windows 10 Pro, Task Manager! Remember to restart your computer! Now it seems perfect!

Thanks for trying to help.
Unfortunately, Blackmagic Software Updater was always enabled in the Startup Task Manager.
Version 11.5 and 11.6 don't work for the Decklink Mini 4k as they disable the card completely.
Only solution is to uninstall 11.5 or 11.6 and reinstall 11.4.
But sincerely appreciate your effort to help.

I tried 11.6 and found the same problem as with version 11.5 that I covered in my previous reply on Wed Mar 04, 2020 7:51 am, though otherwise it's working fine.

But I would suggest that you install the 4K Mini card into a different system and see if it works there with 11.6. If not then you have a defective card.

Secondly, when you install a driver package going from v11.4 to 11.5 or 11.6, on the first reboot there should be a popup that updates the firmware of the card and then there's a system shutdown & reboot. It should then work after this firmware update with the currently installed driver package.

Does that happen with yours, when you install the updated drivers does it do the firmware update?

If not, then the card WOULD be detected by Windows and then ignored by Desktop Video, just as you are seeing (I'm making an assumption here that the newer drivers need the updated firmware to function properly, it just makes sense given the feature updates each new driver package brings to the table so I think it's a safe assumption to make).

If the firmware update is being prevented or interrupted (say, by antivirus or possibly some BIOS setting), then swapping the card into another computer would allow the update to happen and it would then work in the original computer with that particular driver package revision.

But a flakey/defective card, or an interrupted firmware update would seem to be the most likely cause of the problems you are experiencing (though not the only cause, just the most likely). Now a flakey card COULD cause the firmware update to fail, meaning it'll only function with the older driver package from the last successful firmware update, FWIW.

Lastly, is there an actual need for the updated driver package, or does 11.4 work fine on your system? If it's working fine and you don't NEED the updated features, there's an argument then to not worry about updating just for the sake of updating!

I'm interested to hear what you find out!
