4K footage in 1080p timeline to 4K export

PostThu Mar 05, 2020 8:36 am

Hello.

I got an xml which is a 1080p timeline. However in this timeline there is a lot of 4K and 5K footage, which is scaled down in the xml to fit the 1080p timeline.

What is happening if i set the export of my final video to 4K (3840x 2160)?
Is Resolve scaling up from 1080p or is it referring to the quality of the 4K and 5K footage?

Thank you!

I don't think the XML contains scaling information; you're likely using Resolve default scaling settings.

If you intend to export UHD, you can continue to edit on an HD timeline, but you should change the timeline resolution to UHD before you export. Or, change the resolution immediately and edit and export UHD.

If you leave the timeline at HD resolution and export UHD, the system will upscale the 4K clips which have already been down-scaled to HD.

I did a test like a few days ago and Resolve was giving me warning about 4k timeline when I was trying to render 8k (also faild - not enough GPU memory  )

If your original edit was scaling the footage to fit HD, and you selected use sizing information when bringing in the xml, then you would be scaling it down at one point of Resolve, and scaling it back up when you switch your timeline to 4k.

If you set your scale option in Resolve to fit with crop, you will get full screen in hd, and full screen when you switch to 4k. (you have to turn off use size information when you bring in the xml)
you would also then have to double check all your shots against a reference video from offline to see what resizing was done from an editorial standpoint, so you can mimic those shots. Those shots would get a double scale when you switch to 4k as well, but that is the nature of any scale effect the editor chooses to use in offline.

your warning sounds like maybe you only have the free version, which will not do an 8k output.
