Ultra Studio Mini Recorder + MacBook Air

PostSun May 17, 2020 1:47 pm

We purchased a Blackmagic Design Ultra Studio Mini Recorder (Thunderbolt) to connect our Canon XA25 camcorder to a MacBook for use with LiveStream Studio.

✓ The Mini Recorder worked fine on a 13" (2013) MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.4, plugged directly into a Thunderbolt 2 port.

✓ The Mini Recorder also worked fine on a 15" (2019) MacBook Pro running Mojave 10.4.6, using a genuine Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. (See B01MQ26QIY on Amazon.)

HOWEVER, when we tried the same setup on a brand-new MacBook Air running Catalina, the Desktop Video Setup application says the accessory device can't get sufficient power. We successfully installed Blackmagic Desktop Video 11.5.1, authorizing the software via Security & Privacy.

Is limited bus power a known issue with MacBook Airs? Any recommendations beyond purchasing a portable Thunderbolt 3 hub (like B07CZPV8DF on Amazon or the recommended Blackmagic and Magewell alternatives)?
