Sony FS5 Raw Output + Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR

Hello everyone,

I have an FS5 with the raw upgrade. For any non-Sony users out there, it enables the camera to output a 4k raw signal via SDI up to 60p.

At the time of writing there isn't Blackmagic Raw support for the camera on the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. This is a shame, as I'd love to buy one - it would exactly fit my requirements.

My question is, if I were to rig this up over SDI today, what would I be able to record? All I need for my workflow is ProRes 422 4k 50p on a 5" monitor - I can wait to see if BMRaw support for the FS5 is added at a later date but could I get the actual codec / frame rate I need now?

Does anyone know what would happen if I attempted to record from the Sony raw output as things stand?

Grateful for any help / advice.

Cheers!

I have a similar question for the new Sony a7s iii. I am hoping to record it’s raw output with the 12g as well. Can anyone let us know if there is likely to be any support for Sony camera raw output?

you have to ask SONY - they have to provide the data for BRAW at the output !

Is it true? I read this on an article:

The benefits of ProRes RAW from an editing and colour grading workflow are evident especially if you are based in FCP X or Adobe Premiere. Sadly, this doesn’t apply to DaVinci Resolve users as Blackmagic Design have their own competing Blackmagic RAW compressed codec.

So I would buy the new sony beast and at the moment I cannot have raw in resolve?

Is that correct?

Thanks

Correct. But you can use Compressor (Mac) or AME (both) to convert into very high-quality log footage.

But if all new owners of that camera nag both Sony and BM, it might come one day. Sigma fp is an example of such cooperation.

The brand new Nikon cameras offer BRAW but it's a $200.00 plus add-on that has to be done at one of their service centers. So BMD and other manufactures are talking.

I will throw my hat into the ring and hope that BMD and Sony talk and offer BRAW support for the Sony A7Siii camera. It would make my life so much easier and with the popularity of this camera possibility introduce others to the BRAW way of life.

My Sony FS700 also offers me a RAW and thus, I also hope Sony and BMD have a conversation - but - I wonder this; I believe I can record 4K RAW to an Inferno. Moreover, I believe it's ProRes RAW. Wouldn't this solve your issue albeit with a 7" screen instead of 5". For my part, I too would prefer a 5" solution vs. 7" expressly to reduce the mass of the camera on my shoulder with my Element Technica Mantis rig.
