Using Avid FrameFlex data in DaVinci Resolve

PostWed Aug 28, 2013 10:53 am

Hi all, I'm just about to start a cutting and grading a project shot in 4K XAVC on the Sony F55. Here was my workflow as planned:
  1. AMA link the F55 footage, apply a LUT
  2. Transcode to DNXHD36, edit, applying Frame Flex resizes when needed
  3. Relink to AMA media (which does carry across the Frame Flex changes)
  4. Export an AAF to DaVinci Resolve, which would, in theory, read the Frame Flex metadata so I wouldn't have to manually recreate the effects.
I tested this today, and sadly, theory remains theory. No resizing information was retained, even when selecting that option when initially loading the AAF.

Is there any way to troubleshoot this problem? Is Frame Flex data supported in Resolve? I thought I'd read that the latest version (which I'm using) enhanced support for Media Composer 7 conform, but perhaps that didn't include what I'm looking to do.

Thanks in advance.

FrameFlex is not recognized by Resolve. I tried it and in the import it gave me an indication (the yellow box before text) indicating so.

I would say that for now, the best workflow for your particular situation is to
1.ingest in Resolve and do a one light correction,
2.export to Avid as an AFF (low res),
3.edit in Avid,
4.send to Resolve and do your full grading
5.send to Avid and do your FrameFlex moves
6. Output

Or instead of doing a one light in Resolve, do a full grade then export to Avid in hirez and edit in Avid and do your FrameFlez moves without having to return to Resolve.

If you intend to output larger than HD then this is all a moot point because Avid can only output in HD (not larger).
