Organizing/File naming BMCC

PostFri Aug 30, 2013 9:38 am

Maybe this should have gone into the Cinematography topic, but I'll give it a try here...

Fact: small narrative feature length film will be shot on BMCC 2.5K in september.
Problem: organizing, naming footage files

So, what is the best procedure?

Should I name the files in the camera itself, or should I name them after imported from the SSD to a HDD?

Is there a proper reliable way to do this?

Naming ProRes files is somewhat evident, but CinemaDNG RAWs? Should I name the folder?

And last... is there any kind of file name format I should use?

1 BMCC will be used and a DSLR mainly for this shoot.

I'm not familiar with your setup, I'm usually in the receiving end, but here you go some food for the brain:

1) I will name in camera, having unique progressive names, same name will be your Tape ID in the Avid/FCP database and the name of your ProRed/DNx will be coherent as well
2) TC of the clips can be Time of the day as long as the TC will be retain in the Avid/FCP database. the ProRes/DNx TC has to be coherent as well.
3) if you need to "call" the clip something else like "good take" use some field in the Avid/FCP that is a comment, not used for conform.
4) you can name clips with day/scene/takes in camera if you like, this will facilitate you journey later on.
5) If you are not sure of what is going on, try very early to do a edit with 2-3 clip and try to re-conform in the color correct system and see if all is good: early errors in the database can be easily spotted.
6) make a safe copy of your RAW -> this is your only negative, fail to do this can be really really really painful.

I forgot, in the name, only letters, numbers and underscores (no spaces)... that will help the multiplatform assembly...
