Signal issues / Saturation operator causing quantization!

PostFri Aug 30, 2013 12:59 pm

Hi everybody.

Running Resolve 9.1.6 on a CentOs 5.5 machine.
Just performed a live playout to another machine, and I have significant lines in the signal of the live capture. When I render the same clip, signal looks alright.
Recording machine is fine.

See attachments.

I performed the playout by simply playing the timeline and recording the SDI output.
Anyone else having this issue?

Is the SDI out compressed in some way?

Thank you!

are you passing through a file like ProRes? or 8 bit signal?

(Yes it seems a bit "quantized")

If you save a frame as for DPX and get it back and compare, how it looks?

hi walter!

the scopes i attached are from a dvs clipster.
the good one is a rendered DPX file, the bad one is a recorded DPX file.
10 bit all the way through.
source is DPX as well.
no other formats used in between.
resolve SDI out to clipster SDI in.

[light bulb!]

The DPX that went through the SDI channel might have been scaled to video range then scaled back, losing about 14% of information in the greyscale in the process.

verify if this is true.

hi walter.

thanks for your hint.

SDI output of resolve set to video range, thats correct.
SDI input at the recording machine set to video range, as well.

i'm sorry, the screenshots are a bit mistakeable, since the monitoring of the recording device is set to unscaled at the moment of taking the screenshots.
but the problem is still there when viewing the recorded files in video range...

so i would have the quantization in every tape playout. that's unacceptable :|

but i'll give it a try what happens when playing and recording full range (although that won't work for tape). i'll let you know.

Are you monitoring in 444 or 422?

hi there.

just made another test, and at the moment it seems like the problem is caused by the saturation operator.
see attached file, on is colored, one is desaturated to 0 using resolve, the other one desaturated to 0 using clipster.
you can clearly see the quantization in the histogram!

okay, now i'm totally confused...

the quantization in the histogram only shows up when the rendered DPX files (0-1023) are mapped to legal levels. but it still only occurs in the files rendered and desat by resolve. when i desat the clip in clipster, the signal looks good no matter what mapping i choose...
so there has to be some issue on the resolve side.

any help would be much appreciated :-)
