Dual GPU

PostFri Oct 09, 2020 4:30 pm

Hello, looking into investing in an external gpu for my iMac 2019. I've been doing some research into configuring Resolve to utilize dual GPUs (Really trying to get real-time playback when using noise Reduction). Right now, my iMac has an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 48 (8 gb). I was looking into getting either the GeForce GTX 1080 TI. But I'm wondering if Resolve will allow me to utilize dual gpus if the second GPU is of a different manufacturer. I was also looking into the Radeon RX 580 (Much cheaper). That one should work, correct? Or will either be fine?

Yeah, I have the studio version. Now looking at AMD's website, I don't see any Mac drivers. What GPUs can I use on my mac?

Any GPU that also exists in a generic Mac should work fine.
When I use my iMac with the eGPU (see my sig) I get about 80% gain over a single GPU for NR.
Depending on your format, I'd doubt that you'll always get realtime, NR as BM does it is very demanding. But you'll cut down on rendering times.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

This is a pretty good starting place for GPU's in combination with Macs https://barefeats.com/

Thanks! I see a lot of recommendations for AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, but still only see drivers for Windows? But this should work on a Mac? With a Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box, do I not need to worry about drivers when installing this on a Mac?

Yes, Apple normally is taking care of the drivers. That's why I recommended a card that exists in a regular Mac too.
