Playback sound issues with Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0

I having some weird issues with our BM Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 in playback when connected to a 2019 iMac running OS X 10.15.7

1) Noise
When I play audio back through my Intensity Shuttle, I get clicking noises on the audio out - they are low level but audible. This happens regardless of the source. I get it both when I use the device as an output stream in LiveStream Studio or as a straight sound card output in iTunes. This is NOT a ground loop issue. I have repeated with with a MacBook (OS X10.14.6) on batteries feeding into a battery operated headphone amp. Also the noise is only present when there is something playing.

2) No Audio
If the audio setting is set to be HiFi levels in the BM Desktop Video Settings then I get audio. If I turn off the HiFi levels to get access to the sliders then no audio comes out.

I can live with 2) but 1) is a really blocker.

Is this common or do I have a hardware problem?

Thanks

Paul
