ETTR Shots in Resolve

PostSun Sep 08, 2013 7:21 pm

Hi all,

I am a newbie to Resolve, as well as the BMCC. I understand the ETTR approach to get the most DR out of the camera and have been shooting this way. My question is, what is the workflow in Resolve for taming these bright and washed out shots? With Adobe Camera RAW, it's as simple as pulling down exposure and bumping up fill until the shot looks proper, but I don't see similar tools in Resolve. Particularly with skin tones, I can't seem to tame the muddy, blown-out look (exposing just under 100% zebras ETTR). Any help, or can someone point me to a tutorial?

Thanks!

Sorry, no magic button here. Just grade your shots. First step is the resolve manual. It is written by a real life colorist and shows all of the principles of the grade.
But quick answer - learn how to read scopes and use them to align your black levels and your whites.

Thanks Dmitry. Wasn't really expecting a magic button, but the exposure/fill combo in Camera RAW is pretty intuitive and quickly gets you were you need to be to start grading. Was just hoping for something similar in Resolve.

It all starts in the Camera RAW panel. You set the exposure and colour balance there along with how you want the RAW data to be processed (what LUT is applied).
